FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Generally Lower, with the Exception of Erie, Which Advances, GOLD 116 1-4 A N17 A 116 3-4. The Bank Statement—A Further Loss in the Total Reserve—Money on Call Fluctuat- ing, but Easy at the Close— Gossip on the Street. Want, Strenn, } Saturpay, Sept. 18—6 P. M. The market in stocks to-day was feverish, the under- tone weak and doubtful. Operators are by no means Satisfied with the prospective condition, and even a sharp and unexpected advance in Erie failed to com- municate its sympathy to other prices. The fluctua. tions were considerable, and at times the outlook was more discouraging to those who are on the long side than at the close, Concerning all of the non-dividend paying securities there is a feeling that sooner or later they must succumb, not to merely artificial | pressure, but to normal influences which are quietly at work throughout the country, On the other hand dividend paying stocks, like good bonds, continue to be | favorites, and notwithstanding the motives that may | ‘operate for a day or a week are fuirly sustained with ® confidence that does not falter, Exceptionally, Western Union may decline, as it did to-day, from 79 at the opening to 77%, but there are fe who doubt that, if its finances be managed | in the future as they have been managed in the past, the stock at present prices, paying, as it does, two per cent quarterly or a little more than ten per cent p annum on its market price, is not intrinsically profit- able, THE EXCITING FEATURE OF THR MARKET to-day was Erie, of which some 32,000 shares changed | hands. Sir Edward Watkin is supposed to have reached his destination, and the advance madegs ascrived to his presence in London and the possible favorable report by | him to his brother bond and stockholders. We note that there was a gain on the other side of 34 percent, buteven | this gain leaves our own market proportionately higher than it usually is under less speculative conditions, | Judging from the gossip of the street the expectation | fs that a further advance will be made next week, yet, im the absence of a report by the Receiver, and tho known efforts of the English speculators to cr bull market, it may be well cnough p walt awhile before giving credence to the idea that Krie is henceforth an unquestionable purchase. The report concerning a “pooling” process between Lake Shore, Michigan Central and Fort Wayne, noticed yesterday, is without foundation, Pacific Mail was moderately firm for a while, but later the statement ‘was well distributed that the new steamship City of San Francisco was only permitted to sail on the sufferance of “fr, John Roach, her builder, which resulted in weakness at the close of the market. Among the | incidents of the day most calculated to disturb the gold | market if it had been made known before three o’clock 4s the report, which we have from a well known banker that the English steamers during the next fortmght will bring £150,000, and that more is hkely to follow. Disquieting rumors were circulated after the close of the market concerning trouble in an insurance company, but the most solicitous inquiry fails to warrant the pre- sentation of any details, The restless feeling of Wall | street is accounted for by the foregoing intimations, | THE CHANGES IN STOCKS TO-DAY aro as follow: Erie opened at 1914, sold up to 2014 near the close and ended at 20%. Lake Shore fluc- tiated between 5214 a 5334, the closing price being | 63%. Northwest common sold at 283¢ a 88, with Qual | prices at 383{; do, preferred ended at 5334.
