Me. ‘The stock market to-day was firmer, though on a less yactive business than yesterday. The rumor committee }were not in session, and the strect was undisturbed by Seusations of any kind. It 1s not generally believed ithat the improvement is permanent, but morely the result of efforta to sustain the market and induce a Marge short interest. The bears in their prognostica- yhions evidently view the future with no hopeful eyes, jand aro operating accordingly. Dgleful statements are mado concerning the condition of many of the railway Porporations, while the dulness of trade is cited as a incher tn every argument that favors an early return fto prosperity. Unfortunately, too many facts are on the yeide of these gentlemen. The recent failures have distrust, and it is difficult to distinguish be- }ween the sound and the rotten, It is also true that next phase ja the situation is likely to be a reduc jeion in ‘THE PRICE OF LABOR " jand the number of employés. The proprietors of one pof tho largest jewelry manufacturing establishments in the metropolis to-day commenced to discharge a por- jtion of their clerks and artisans The example will ibtless be followed by others, and the laboring classes do well if they regard the signs of the times and, y adapting their wages to the change in values that is ing place, stiffen the sinews of capital and once jmore encourage it to find employment in developing the eal wealth and the now unprofitable industries of the country. Labor may be the last to yield in the struggle fthat is going on to keep prices up to former standards, Wut yield at last it must, It is a great factor in the pCa of prosperity, and the laws of trade aro inevi- THE NEWS FROM CALIFORNIA Js not less encouraging than it was yesterday. Corroy.—The demand from spinners for spot cotton was unabated and prices were generally well sustained, especially for desirable lots of strictly good ordinary, low middling and the better qualities, which were all in demand to the neglect of grades below strict good ordinary. The low grades, with- out being pressed for sale, were offered at relatively low prices, but failed to attract attention. In referring yesterday to the stock of spot cotton as being understood to show by actual count less than the running account by about 6,000 the bales, we should have explained that count incl unmerchantable cotton and a ortion of cotton already sold but not yet taken om port, #0 that the amount of stock really available fot purchase was fognd to be ebout 6,000 bales tees than the running accongt, It is now understood that, ex- cluding unmerehantable cotton and cotton already sold’ but not delivered, the real stock 1s about 28,000 bales,. With. so much new cotton in sight, however, this fact is without im- portant significance. After ‘Change to-day the eales of spot cotton included 400 bales to spinners. In fact, not single sale took place, Lyman Scott sold at private sale two lots on 111th street, east of Third avenue, for $7,500, which two years ago brought $9,200, B. P. Fairchild had a foreclosure sale on the west side of Rider avonue, 693 feet south of 144th street; BE. A. Lawrence & a foreclosure sale on the west side of Tenth avenue, north of Sixtieth street, and Steele & Carter a like sale of No. 74 Centre street, This was about al! that transpired throughout the day. THE ROBBERY RECORD, The following robberies were reported at the Central office yesterday :— Richard Allen, residing at No. 241 Wost Forty- | third street, mot an unknown man on Madison avenue, and after some conversation they both concluded to hire a room at the Washington Hotel. The fluctuations in the stock market yesterday will ve found in the proper column, No excitement charac- terined the dealings, which, with one or two excep- ious, were within the range of one percent, There Seems, however, to be one general sentiment upom Wall streot and its environs—é ¢, that no healthy Speculation cap take place until it is put out of the power of ONE UNSCRUPULOUS OPERATOR to control the destinies of themarket, Such ® mam, whether he be named Jay Gould or John Smith, may a& times, for selfish reasons, act the part of a public bene- factor by staying @ panic; but no sooner is he reheved of restraint, no sooner can he manufacture public set timent or Induce a false confidence tn his favor, tham his mahgn influence and fatal power asserts themselvem. He destroys the fair fabric of credit, and, unlike Samsom who pulled down the pillars of the Temple and perished amid the ruins, would escape as on Black Friday, and mock the multitude groaning in the dust, It is this fear which deters capitalists from entering into the field; ft is this thought, echoed from every city and town, through nearly all Wall street offices, which has sapped confidence, destroyed credit and laid prostrate the legitimate trade in stocks. ‘THE ASSESSMENT ON CREDIT FONCIER SHAREHOLDERS of England of £2 10s. per share was announced in Wall street about noon yesterday, but created no excitement. This assessment was regarded at first asa failure, from the fact that the institution, though started in London, had branches all over Europe, and was known to have been heavily involved, 4 2 Americaine, in all sorts of enterprises, many of which, owing to the times, are rendered more than doubtful. Further advices, how- ever, may reveal that the capital, £1,600,000, will be made tntact by the now assessinent, There were some rumors, also, of the failure of a Bremen shipping house, which, however, could not be traced to an authentie source, ‘THE ERIN RAILWAY COMPLICATION, with the New Jersey and New York Railway Company came toa termination yesterday by the order of the Chancellor of New Jersey commanding the Erie road peremptorily to replace the switches and track torn up at the Junction of the Now Jersey and New York Rath way. It is said the following 1s a true statement of the difficulty which the Chancellor thus aettles so sum marily :— ‘The not sum due for tolls from the New Jersey and New York road at the beginning of the controversy last month was $16,700. In addition, on August 15 a note for $5,000 became due from the debtor corporation, The Erie Company demanded $5,500 tn cash and the complete liquidation of all the other road’s debis to it~ including accumulated tolls—amounting to about $33,000, by October 15, while the New Jersey Company asked ab extension of time to December 15, promis! earlier payment {f possible. The legal ground assu in the suit by the New Jersey Company is understood to be that the accumuiation of tolls was by the under- stood consent of the Erie officers that the early liquida- tion of the debt was reasonably assured, and that, were the elaims of the Erie Company just, tts appeal should have been to the courts an@not to acts of violence, In rogard to the telegraph involvements noticed te this column yesterday, and about which nothing new has transpired, Mr. Frank Work, tho Broad street banker, desires to correct two trifling tnaccuractes which the reporter made in the publication of an inter view with him, One was that the Western Union Com- pany was to guaranteo a dividend of seven per cent ona capital of $2,500,000 to the Atlantic and Pacific Tele~ graph, whereas he meant to have said that the Western Union was to pay the shareholders of the latter com- PaDY aR SAME DIVIDEND AS TIE WESTERY UNION stockholders received, whether that should be great om small The other error was in saying that Mr. Ortom recelved a communication, after the Western Uniom meeting, from Mr, Gould—it should have been from the secrotary of the Atlantic and Pacific—in which alb negotiations were declared to bo suspended on the part of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company. THE GOLD QUESTION is just now assuming great importance in view of the advancing premium in this markot, its scarcity in Calle fornia, and the efforts of the government in the direc- tion of specie payments. The precious metal was worth to-day from 1-82 to 8-64 for the uso of every $10,000, and the merchants ‘“‘short”” ot it, therefore, had to sub- mit to the extortion of the above premium. There ts no question that when the last gold combination, coos months since, ran gold up to 117, the pool manipula by the venerable Daniel Drew and his faithful satellite Jacob Rubino would have put the premium much higher and probably forced a “corner” on the mer chants, but forthe supply that camo pouring in from California, This BROKE THE BACK OF THR GOLD MONOPOLISTS, andthe combination was a fuilure, The gold drawn, however, from San Francisco made a tight movey mare ket there, and no doubt placed weapons in the bands of the enemies of the Bank of Cal:fornia, with which they stabbed the rival -‘bauk crowd” to death. This coin, however, is going back there. Whether this ac counts for the scarcity here It ts impossible to say, but some facts in connection with this great nati question may not be oagsqes here. In 1861 Secre- Pot Chase made a report t Congress, of which the foliowing ia an extract :— Treascry Darartment, Sept. 9, 1861. “No means exist of ascertaining with ‘absolute cor tainty the quantity of coin now in tho United bmeoes bat the best accessible data leads the Secretas cur inthe judgment of the Director of the int ‘ha the amount is between $275,000,000 and $300,000,000.” Extract from the report of RH. Linderman, Director of the Mint, to Hon. B. H. Bris Secretary of Treasury, dated Octdbor 18, 1874:—The amount specie in the pear’ according to the official reports of the Treasurer of the United ‘States and tho Comp troller of the Currency, is as follows:— “Held by the Treasury and national banks at the close of the fiscal year euding Juno 30, 1872, in coin, $98,339,864 30; estimated coin in Pavide coast States and Territories, $20,000,000; in the hands of the banks ee P sss $10,000,000, making total of $128,389,- wed to this two years’ products of the United States mines, $14,000,000, and imports of coin and bullion for two years, say $49, 695,343, and we have a total of $315,085,207 49 for the two years ending June 30, 1874; then’ deducting the amount of coin exported during the two years ending June 30, 1874, which is $151,238,979, and we have the total estimated stock of bullion om hand, $166,846,228 49 to June 30, 1874 Comparing these with the estimated amount of coin om band in ee eae we aro poorer now in the tous met yy precious ten mapas srcisdes or. voLtanst This probiem of gradual coin impoverishment ts left to the consideration of thoughtful Qnanciers, Whether we shall still continue to sell and export our coin in the face of these figures while holding out specie resump- tion as @ fixed idea remains for our political economists to dotermine. SUITS AGAINST THR RANK OF CALIFORNIA continue. Yesterday, on the affidavits of J. W. Drexel and Albert Gallup, in the suit of Drexel, Morgan & Ca, vs. The California Bank, to recover $25,000 in Judge Brady, in Supreme Court, Chambers, granted the usual order of gublication, The afidavits set forth that the defendant is a foreign corporation; that no officer of the defendant could be found within the State on whom service could be made; that the President of the bank is dead and tho cashier ves in San Francisco, &.
