“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL pes ‘Stock Speculation Still Dull—Railroad Bonds Strong gud Tending Upward. GOLD FIRM AT 113 41133-8, e The Treasury Count--Reports from the Western Crops. WALL STREET, } THURSDAY, August 6—0 2. M. The stock market to-day continues to be devoid of intergst, aitnough the transactions slow @ iight increase on those of yesterday. It ts ‘hought by careful observers that consiaerable realizing took place on the part of holders of long Mocks; but, at the best, there was only a “broker's market.’ The chief and only excite- Ment of the day was developed just before the lose of vusiness hours, when the atr was sud- dently filed with rumors of impending muisfor- tune. There were mysterious hints and sug- gestive shrugs, and in some instances the nam ‘of parties were mentioned who are supposed to oe im pecuniary trouble. We fail, however, to find a substantial reason that warrants the pud- Moation of any concern as being either weak or in Manger. It is enough that distrust exists, and shat misfortune may come quickly, without being ‘Relped forward by those who would be only too xiad to tread once more among the ruins of a nancial crisis. Vouservative men everywhere will frown wpon efforts of this character, and while preparing ior whatever unbappy event may bo voreshadowed by these phantoms of speculation, will ata, by all legitimate means, in maintaining confidence and thus protecting the vast interests atatake. If it was intended by those who circu- ated the rumors above indicated to amect the stock market the efforts was without avail, for until nearly the close prices were generally gteady. Hven then the decline was so slight and Uatural as to excite no unusual comment, THE SALES TO-DAY amounted to abont 43,000 shares, which were dis- tributed among the most active stocks as fol- lows:—New York Central and Hudson, 270; Erte, 1,400; Lake Shore, 18,700; Northwestern, 3,000; do. preferred, 100; Rock Island, 5,016; Pacific Mail, 9,000; St. Paul, 1,000; do. preferred, 800; Dhios, 3,900; Western Union, 5,730; Wabash, 300; Onion Pacific, 400. . A week or more of clear weather, with a northeast. wind, will dO much to counteract the Gamage done by the storm, and dry the standing crops and the land sufficiently to enable @ good harvesting. The prospect 18, therefore, a fuvor- able ove on the Whole, and the Influence on the general commerce and business of this country will be decidedly. good. The Sontn can largely supply itself with grain, and the surplus of tne ‘West may be crawn upon by Europe. THE CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN RAILWAY COM- PANY.
