‘ANANCLL A AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Barely Steady---Western Union the Feature of the Day. DECLINE IN WHEAT. Advance in Gold from 112 to 112 3-4, Closing at 112 5-8—Money Easy and Goy- ernments Firm, WALL STREET, } Monnay, July 26—6 1’, M. ‘The wheat speculation does not to-day present 90 brave and fuil a front as was expected a little while ago, The price has dectined both in Liver- pool and Onicago. New York, being middie ground, simply reflects the situation in both ‘cities, Hence a tenderness 1 observed in the dealings of the Stock and Produce exchanges. While operators are willing to concede the proba- dility ofa fair market and good prices for our breadstuffa there 18 not a disposition among cau- tious men to be misled by the forced and tempo- rary values that attach to the looking up of a crop, or by the singularly coincident reports from both sides of the Atiantic that seem to have no other purpose than to advance prices and play into the hands of mutually terested speculators, ‘The few farmers who have availed tnemselves of Jate figures and shipped their wheat to market Promptly May be regarded as EXTREMELY FORTUNATE. They have done well to the thousands who, in their greed, have been waiting and now seo many cents per bushel against them from the highest prices. We can only repeat what was writcen in this column at the beginning of the movement— forward your crops. The speculation has been too sndden to be naturai, the advance too great %o be permanent, ana the supply is too-large for even the richest speculator to hope that by any ingenuity he can maintain the price at the rate that has been recently esvablished. Europe bas suffered but is not ruined, Her demand on America has been considerable, but by no means exhaustive, We have plenty and plenty to spa ‘Ir the shipments of wheat had been made when @vld was at 116 or M1 the profits to tne operator would have been greater than now, but this ts no reason why tne producer should not avail himself ofimmediase opportunities and thus secure for himself whatever advantage 18 offered even to a bag currency, THE STOCK MARKET. The stock Market to-day presented as its chier and most interesting feature a sharp yet not alto- gether unexpected advance in Western Union. Toe price at the opening was 81, alter which sales were made at 81% a $244 a 62%, with a close at 824%. Other stocks showed a less favorable undertone than has lately prevailed, especially those of the Western lines. This result was due, {n a large measare, to the redaction in the price of wheat and the doubt whether a@ speculation 60 rampant as that recently recorded could continue without a sudden and dangerous collapse thas Might involve outside and cquaily grave intere: It was owing, also, to'considerable realizing sales on the part of those who believe that they can bay at lower than present figures before the real work of the fall campaign begins. Business was Gull and the transactions comparatively smail, attention being directed principally to the stock already named, to Lake Shore, Northwest and Pacific Mail, Union Pacific opened at 75, advanced to 7534 and closed at 743%. Lake Shore moved from 613, to 62, but Weakened at the close to 6174. Wabash moved up to 7, ending at 6%. @t 4244, closed at 41%, the preierred at 45, the best price of tne day being 55%. Rock Island was © firm at 1053s. Ohio and Mississippi sold at 24a | 234g a23%.
