BUTCHER KNIFE—HIS AR- REST EFFECTED BY NEIGHBORS. Easron, Pa., July 26, 1875, The village of Portland, Northampton county, ‘was the scene of an exelting affray on Saturday night, in which @ wife received wounds at the hands of her husband which may prove /atal, and which only fatied in terminating in one of the most brutal wife murders on record by the timely interference of neighbors, Wiiham Williams 1s a Welsh slave quarryman, who has been working in the slate quarries Rereabout for several years. Lately he has neglected and abused his family, consisting of & wife and girl, thirteen years oid, and spent his wages on @ notorious woman living in the community, Within a few days past he made {eariul threats agatnst the life of nis wife because she had remonstrated with him upon his condnot, and on Saturday she became so alarmed for her safety that she swore out @ war- rant for his arrest, and had him placed under bonds to keep the peace, About six o'clock on Saturday night Wiliams went home, His wile ‘Was out in the back yard, He called to her to come into the house, as he wanted to talk with her. She ‘was afraid of him and declined to enter the house. Willlams then went away, and about seven o'clock his wife went to the rear part of the garden to miik her cow. As she Sat with her back to the house milking she heard a stealtny tread bebind her, but betore ane could turn round she was seized by ner hair and jerked over on the ground, The assuilant was her husband, “You wouldn’t come in, wouldn’t you?
