THE TORTURED CONVIOTS. WHY THE PRISONERS REVOLTED AT THE HUD- SON COUNIY PENITENTIARY—‘‘GIVE US OUR THRE MEALS AGAIN. The investigation into the management of the Hudson County Penitentiary at Snake Aull, which 1s being held by a special committee consisting of Messrs, Wickham, Dwyer, McPulllips, O'Reilly and Meinken, has developed so mavy irregularities that the cause of the late revolt and the almost totai absence of discipiine ig no longer a secret. Six witnes: have been examined and twenty- three bave yet to be heard, The testimony ts voluminous, but the points established by it are suficient for the iniormation of the tax- payers ab whose expense this system has been maintaimed. ‘There are two Tearures in the investigation which will imvensify public indignation, The test is that the comunit- tee have deciaed not tu push their inquiry Into (ransactious previous to tie lst of May, whe: the graver charges of cruelty toward prisoners whica the committee were nstructed, by & res0- {ation of the Boara of Freenoldcrs, to investigate, Nave reierence to occurrences previous to that ‘Ume, and the inquiry; will be the merest farce if those transactions are not thorouguly sifted. The Jecond is Lhe persizient attempt made by Messrs, U’Rellly and aleinken to have Warden Post, 48 the subject of the inquiry, admitted toa t With the comiittec. in this, however, they Dave Ot yet succeeded. it has been proved over and over that two pris- oners—Laweon and Cassids re treuted in a bratal manger by Post. His sons and other mem- ders of bis raunily hold keys jor the tstitution, Amd these keys Carried at large are lable to be Jost and 1ali intu the banas of some iriend’of one or more oF the convicts, Lt would be then a trifing matter to restore puschars to inberty. Mrs, Solo- mon, daugater of who baa never been ap- patisa to any position b- reebolders, superintends the management of the brison at times und holds the keys. Une of Post's bons, who 18 a brakeman on the Central Kaliroad, mot only enters the institution at any nour bf the might he plesses, but the horse and wagon belonging to tue county 1s placed Qt bis convenience. Another su, Who has uever received any appuldtigent as a county off- eer, drives the county horse and wagon to we ounty dail for prisoners, while three of the keepers remained unemployed. ‘ine depury keep- ®rs compluin they have nut proper uccowmoda- ions for sleeping, while Mrs, Soiomon vceupies & foom large enough to-accommodate six keevers, One o1 the female prisoners, named Mug Johnson, Was taGen one evening !rom her celi and quartered jn the private apartments of the Penitentiary, her janguage in the hearing of the keepers meauwhile being too fou! jor pubiucation. Tnis occurred on the l7ta of March last. On the létnof July the Warden and bis entire retinue left the Peniten- tary and proceeded to u saloon on the Secaucus road, leaving the aforesaid Mag Jobnson and Ell Burns, both prisoners, in charge of uls ‘tinepts till he returned at a late hour i the pignt, ‘ir Wickham, chatrman of the committee, made @ tour o! the Penitentiary alter the investigation, Rud one of the prisoners, WhO recognized him, said, “For God’s sake, Mr. Wickham, give us our Shree meals ugain apd we'll do any thing iu our power for you, We can’t stand this”? Atihe meeting next. Wednesday two persons who called ut the HERALD office yesterday statea \hat they will testify to something more starting regarding the management Of this instituuon ftoan anything that has yet transpired, Mr Lumming, the prominent reformer of the Board of Freeholders, said to &@ HenaLp repr ‘Otutive:—“ihis Penitentiary scandal ia not only a disgrace tu tae county, but to the State, As far as 1am concerued, i wili insist on & thorough investigation.” The disclosures concerning the profanution of the vall for sacred worship are not fit jor publication; but 1! known they would arouse toe indignation of every honest man in Hudson county. Tue folowing are tne principal prisoners who made their escape :—James Powers, June 12; Joun Lahey, June 28; James Cooler and Kugolph Pahua (the tatver sentenced to nye years), June 30; Joha Barrett, snly 3% William Harney, who escaped on the 28th of June, was recaptured. ‘The total num. ber ol escapes within three years Was turee times aa large us the number previously trom tae foundation of the institution.
