THE COURTS. In the case of Thomas Quinn, who carried on business as a retail liquor dealer at No. 337 East Thirty-fourth street, Untied states Commissioner Shields held the defendant in $500 for a violation Of the Revenue law, in that he failed to pay the special tax required, Application was made yesterday to Jndge Dono- hue, in supreme Court, Chambers, by Mr, William F. Kintzing, for writs of habeas corpus and cer- tlorari on aif of James Coddington, confined in the City Prison on a charge of complicity with Hamilton, the defaulting Treasurer of Jersey City in the larceny of $10,000 worth of Jersey City bonds. The writs were granted and made re- turnable on Monday. Mr, Kintzing also applied yesterday to Judge Donohue for a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of Peter Girk, the grain merchant arrested and committed on the Ist inst.to the Tombs ona charge of having obtained $16,000 worth of malt from John Skelly through false and fraudulent representations. This writ was likewise granted and made returnable to-morrow. THE FALL RIVER ELOPEMENT. George S. Allen, the bartender at Fall River, Maas., with whom the unmarried daughter of his employer recently eloped to this cliy, and wno was arrested on a charge of adultery, was yesterday brought be‘ore Judge Donohue, in Supreme Court, Chambers, on the writ of habeas corpus sued out by Mr. William F, Rowe, his counsel, He was discharged on the commit- ment of Police Justice Murray, but was, however, immediately rearrested, when his counsel said that the return to the writ after the last arrest said that Allen was hela by virtue of a warrant of Governor Tilden on a requisition from the Goy- ernor of Massachusetts. The prisoner, be further stated, traversed that return. Tne alleged crime was adultery, which, tt Was coneeded, was a crime by the laws of Massachusetts; but tue prisoner de- that crime or fed punishment of any from Massachussetts to avon crime, or that at any time or place in Massa- chussetts he committed adultery with the said Efe Thurston or any one else. Mr. Howe argues that the offence with which Allen is charged, if committed at all, was cominitted outside the ter- ritorial limits of Massachussetts and while the boat was in the waters of Connecticut.
