10 THE SWIMMING MATCH. & VISIT TO JOHNSON AND COYLE AT THEIR TRAINING QUARTERS—COYLE, THE UNKNOWN, V8. JOHNSON, THR CHAMPION—AN INTEREST- INO CONTEST AND 4 CLOSE STRUGGLE IN . Paraperrnis, July 20, 1875. ‘The great swimming match for the champion- Bhip and $2,000 . between J. B. Johnson, the champion of Greas Britain, and Thomas Coyle, of Chester, Pa., 1s to take place on Thursday next, ‘the 22d inst. The contest will, without doubt, be Qn interesting one, and, a3 far a8 can be judged by the conduct of the men close and exciling struggle, ‘Both men bave Deen living for four weeks past at Gloucester Point, on the Jersey shor few miles below this eity, Jonnson making his headquarters at the Buena Vista House, hear tie steamboat landing, and bis plucky antagonist training irom @ more retired public Mouse, further down the beach ana | known as the Centennial Park Hotel. Gloucester Point 1s @ cheap place of resort, resemblivg a tross between Coney Island and Donnybrook Fair, and every alternoon the beaca is crowded by motiey throngs from. the city, On pleasure bent, Bat of a fragal mind, ‘the pleasure being derived mostly from beer gar- @ens, with rough benches and discordant masic, A8apeze and acropatic performances on the beach by circus men whose tights and tinsel look very coarse by daylight, . TRE ENGLISH CHAMPION, Johnson, whose breast is covered with medals won in the old country, in many a hard battle with the waves, gives a public exhibition of his prowess every other day. He gets into a boat with his as- Mistant and rows himself up the river when the Side is ronning down. Hoe takes a long pull against the current, and, woen two or three miles Bway, Jumps overboard, wearing a brecchcloth, nd swims back with the tide. He swims easily apd gracelully, varying his position from the sual one on his breast by /requenty turning to either side and to his back, propelling himself while in this attitude by a@ pecuiiar tirusting upward and backward of pis hands, He swims under water, turns Bomersaults and plays like & porpoise, seeming poriecrly atbome. He takes long walks daily and Ns In the Woods With his trainer, uses the clubs anu takes other exercise. This 1s his dally course of training, and, ar as appearances go, he Is in prime condition. le seems perfectly confident of winning this race, as he bas many Others, and is | Naking matters very easily. Johnson's record, bis wanner of swimming and bis magnificent payne! proportions are too well known tn New ‘ork since his contest at Long Branch to need repetition here. HIS ADVERSARY, COYLE. ‘Thomas Coyle, of Chester, Pa., who 1s to con- test the champion’s right to wear that title in this country, bas never before swum @ race and is an BuknoWn mad. ‘The ‘sports’ have wondered at bis temerity in challenging the Englishman, while admiring his pluck. ‘They shake their beads ominously at the idea of his Winning and quietly put their Money on Johnson, Nevertheless, the favorite may be beaten, as before has happened in sporting annals. A yisit to the sudacious con- ag re makes it reasonably certain, wen you straight im the face and says, mean to win this race, if | can,’ that a jomas Coyle is an Irisnman by Dirto, thirty-five years of age, but has lived lcag in (bis country and tas not @ (euch e! the brogue, He was jour years in the Uniied States Navy dur- ing the war, ond learned to swim in the service, He lives at Ohester, and works in one 0: the great Snip yaras of Jono Roach.
