CRINE ON THE FRONTIER. Arraignment and Trial of Murderers of Every Color and Hue. DETAILS OF THE CRIMES Twenty Men Charged with Murder and Eight Sentenced To Be Hanged. The Heavy Expenses of the Western Dis- trict of Arkansas Accounted For. STORY OF A WINNEBAGO BRAVE. Foxr Samira, ark., July 17, 1875. One of the longest and most important terms of the United States Court tor this, the Western dis- trict of Arkansas, ever held here nas just closed. The throng of hangers-on and attendants—Choc- taws, Cherokees, Seminoles, negroes, roughs and others—nave departed, and the Court officials, as Well aa the citizers of our border town, have set- tled down to their wonted quietude until the jall term again brings to light the customary appall- img record of crime, Tne readers of the HERALD are almost dally presented with the details of some revoiting murder committed in the more populous States east of the Mississippi River, and &s they read they experience a certain amount of atisfaction growing out of the knowledge that the perpetrators stand a reasouxble chance of becoming examples before the majesty of the law and paying th penalty for their feeds = upon the scaffold. But were (he dark deeds of the Indian Territory as promptly chroniclea, though briefly, even the ample pages of the HERALD would not suffice to contain the record. Few of your readers are aware of the fact that the jurisdiction of this Court extends overa territory double the sizeof the State of New York, and, in addition to the jurisdiction of like courts in other States, Is the sole tribunal before which all persons Charged with crimes committed within the Indian Terrttory—except crimes committed by Indians upon or against Imdians—maust betried. At the opening of the late term of the Court tnere were twenty persons confined in the United States jail here CHARGED WITH MURDER. Of these eight were convicted as charged, five were convicted of manslaughter, and the cases of the others were continued to the next term of the Court. To give an accountin detail of the tacts connected with eack chapter in this dark volume within the limits of a single newspaper article is impossible; but I will endeavor to present a brief ‘ommary of the more important cases, Logetner with the personnel of those who will soon expiate their crimes upon the scaffold. The list com- mences witn John Whittington, a white man, about thirty years of age, slender built, tall and angular, and with few of the marks of a rafMfan about bim other than those which characterize te average Texas ‘bullwsanger” or fronticis- man. He was convicted of kiliing J. J. Turner, near Delaware Bend, on Red River, Chickasaw Nation, February 7, 1875. Meney was the incen- tive and whiskey the inspiration. It was Sund: Whittington and his victim visited a Texas “whi: key ranche” together, drank to intoxication and started for Rome tn each other’s company. This Was the last time Turner was seen alive. A son of the murdered man, who had ridden out to meet bis father, discovered, as he appreached the crossing of Red River, two horses standing gear the road and @ man in a stooping position beside them. The man—evidently Whittington— at that moment arose, mounted one of the borses and started in the direetion from which young Turner was approaching, but, discovering him, turned and rode rapidly toward the river. Turner pursued, came up with and attempted to arrest Bim, but failed. Wahittington escaped into Texas, but was soon captured, and on being searched a bloedy knife was fownd upon nls person; also two United States motes of the denomination of $5 and $100, which were recognized as the prop- erty of THE MURDERED MAN. Search being made, Turner's body was found ar where the son had first discovered the two borses, with two gashes in lis head and sour cuts in his throat. The jury had no trouble ae a verdict of guilty. Daniel Evans, a white man, twenty-one years of age, short, well built and powertul, one of the klad .wno relisb @ tittle killing now and then, as te average New Yorker relishes a horse race, stands convicted of murdering William R. Sibalt, near Eufaia, Choctaw Nation, something over a year ago. it is supposed tat the parties Jeli in with each otrer travelling in the same direction. Aiter riding @ jew miles Evans dropped tothe rear, deliberately shot Sibalt in tne back, dragged the body a bundred yards from the road, and, after robbing it of some money and a puir of boots, secreted itin the bushes. He also appropriated the dead man's horse, ‘The case was tried at the Uctover Term, 1874, bat owing to insuiiciency a evidence a humg jury was the result, Between that time and the opening of the late term Sibalt’s father, who resi in heard of the killtog oO: Dis son and came here to learn tne Jacts. Omana, July 8, 1875. Flannel Jim was a Winnebage Indian, but he had a heart a» seft and sensitive as any white man, Jim for some time past had not beew happy in bis domestic affairs. Years agohe married a dusky maiden of the !orest and gave to her all the love of his savage heart. That she was beautiful and clean we inter from the fact that she was much sought alter by other braves, and, what most dis- tressed Jim, sue seemed to like their atten- tions, Jim was noz the man to mince matters, and he told his irisky wife, in language more pointed than polite, if she did not stop her flirting with other Indians he would put ome or séveral holes in her with his big butcher. Tne lady does not seem to have had the fear of @ husoand’s wrath before ber eyes, nd, true to his word, Jim last Monday, In a fit ofjeaiousy, tell up- on big Wile, stabbing berin a d.zeu places and killiog her almost instantly.
