A NEW ENGLAND SEA-SIDE RESORT. OLD ORCHAED BEACH, ME., July 13, 1575. (Correspon tence of The Star.) DEAR STAR: Accidentally, my attention Was attracted to this seaside retreat, which, although not so well known as it should ba, is yet so worthy of notice that a brief de- scription of the place may interest some of your many readers. THE PLACE. Old Orchard Beach is situated on the Maine coast, just between the Saco and Searboro rivers. The line of beach proper, as thus de fined, is fully ten miles in lengta, and averages no less Uian twenty rods in thus affording pehaps the mo cent drive upon the Atlantic coast. & tide, one would imagine that two or thr ocrgrand avenues had been pla Side, so great ts the width, and so pert smooth the surface of the beach. I was somewhat at a loss to divine the origin of the name “Old Orchard” as applic i in this ease, until our landlord explaine that in the memory of the oldest inhabitants there had once existed an orchard here. Sur enough, in taking a ramble yesterday, I came across some venerable aud ragged ap- ple trees looking strangely out of place among the forest pines. “The place has sprung quite suddenly into existence as a popvlar resort. One of the youngest, it. is rapidly becoming one of the most desirable bathing places in New England. THE BEACH. urf bathing is, here. perfeetly free from danger, and bathers can safely ventaore out to a surprising distance, braving without fear the white breakers as they come roiling in upon the shore.
