M. The market to-day, while mteresting, was not particulariy suggestive. Conaideravle realizing took place in several active stocks at the figures that have been recently established, and, under this influence, the closing prices showed & decline from those of yesterday ranging from 34 to 14 per cent. Pacific Mail led the downwaid movement, and was closely followed by Lake Shore and West- ero Union. The lower priced securities were com. paratively neglected, and, therefore, showed more or less of the firmness that has attended their market for several days. Notwithstanding tumors of trouble with one of the banks that were Industriously circulated aitermoon and the mis- Jortune of a gold speculator who had calculated somewhat improvidently, the undertone of stocks was by no means discouraging at the close, and there were various evidences that investors were tnereasing their holdings at each fractional 4 sline. THE PRICES TO-DAY Were as follows:—Lake Shore advanced trom 50% @ 6055, but receded at the close to 594. Western Union opened ut 8134, advanced to 814% and re- ceded to 79%. A YRESH SENSATION—A CONFLICT BBTWEEY TWO BANKS—A MYSTERIOUS OPRRATOR IN GOLD—HITCH IN THE GOLD CLEARINGE—s BULL SPECULATOR SOLD OUT. There was something like a convulsion tn gold market yesterday, which seemed to be the feature of most interest. Thus gold opened at 4 below the closing price of Wedbesday night, whict Was 116}, and trom that declined to 115%, rallying later, will be seen by @ reference to the mone} | columns. Simuitapeously with the deeline, how, ever, two rumors gained currency on the street One :o the effect that a large defaication nad bee! discovered In one of the downtown banks, or tha! such bank was seriously embarrassed owing to its connection with some of the bull speculators in the recent movement so advance the gold pre- mium. ‘The other was to the effect that the checks of a recent prominent bull operator in gold hua been tnrown out of the gold clearing house. Hence there was mucn difiiculty in effecting tne gold clearings. Tne name of THE THIRD NATIONAL BANK being mentioned In connection with the first men tioned rumor, Inquiry was at once made by tne reporter at the bank of the cashter, Mr. Jordan, as to the meusure of the truth in such ramor o1 Ms lalsity, This elicited from Mr. Jordan an em phatic denial of the truth of the rumor to whict his attention was called eituer in whole or in part He likewise stated that the bank was not in any way invoived in tue recent effurt to bull gold and was entirely sree of any results flowing there from. He likewise exhibited the daily staie ment of the bank in support of his assertion tuat the bank could meet ali its indeptedness ut ouce Mf necessary. When interrogated as to how ne could account Jor the existence of suca # rumor Ou the street he tacetiously begged the quesiiun, leaving the imterroga.or quite In the durk us to how much he knew eicner of fact or surmise ta that counection, Leaving Mr. Jordan, the writer, who bad another clew to ioliow in his endeavor to Get at “the bottom Jacts” upon woick tuis super- | scructure of rumor had been founded, visited THE MECUANICS’ BANKING ASBOCLATION, | whoge name Was inentioned in connection with the same lmatter, sere the cashier, Mr. Readiuy, was more communicative, and courteously ex- plained the matter substantially as lollows:—Oa ‘Tuesday last the Mechanics’ Bamking Assocation certined (he check Of one of its customers, drawu for an amount suficient to take up $125,000 yoid, then awaiting such customer’s order at the tied National Banx, this beiag clearly understood a3 the purpose fur waoich such check was drawn at ume Ol its certitication, The check was seut around to the Tuird National Bank by a boy, whom, exercising ordinary prudence, Mr. declined to deiiver the gold, bus retaimec ths | check, telling the boy to send the drawer around. ‘Toe drawer having meanwhile disappeared witn- oul making his account good the Cashier of the Mechanics’ Banking Association ealled on Air. Jordan, at the Third National Bank, later in tae day and askeu for the yold, which, be! relused, ee asked that the certification be erased from cue eck. ‘This was also rolused, oO that the Thira Nu- tonal Bank kept ossession alike of the gold as well as of tn rot the Mec! ? Banking Association. The latter insiitauion obtainca ub attachmeut yesterday afternoon from Judge | Barrett to cover tue gold in the possession of the Third National Bank, which secur the rights ot the former, while the latter boids tue | check ol the Mechanics’ Banking Association for 118 protection. trath of the Matter came our later, and 1t shews how easily Wall street 11 | amected by rumors and how readily the facts can be exaggerated. It appears that Mr. F. N, Egcles, a broker, dotug business at No, 26 Broad strees, leit the city on Saturday to visit his sick mother in Toronto, Canada, leaving no busivess trans tons uofinished behind him nor uny checks un paid by his baukers. Gold jas likewise soid out under the rule for wa account, A SINGULAR ACCIDENT. TWO MORSES FALL INTO A POOL OF LYE AND ARE BURNED NEARLY TO DEATH—THE DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED. At the foot of West Tenth street is a large, vacant lot of made land, occupied by the White Star line of steamers a8 a storage ground, upon which are discharged cargoes of soda asn, im- ported irom Europe, packed in boxes and burrels, The heavy rains of Wednesday nignt soaked | gnrough many of the barrels, and yesterday | morning @ large pool of water, about mine 1ncice deep, bighly impregnated with tue soda ash and 1orming @ strong lye, covered the centre of the lot.
