LINDO BROS. ee me fr a oN en a THE FIREMEN. ONLY TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY OF THE MEN PAID—FIVE HUNDRED YET UNPAID-—THE FEELING AMONG THEM. | Owing to the late hour om Saturday that the Comptroller sent word to the firemen that he would pay them their salaries at his office only 240 received their money, and these consisted of the First battalion, under eommand of Engineer Roe; the Second battalion, Eugineer Bonner; Third battalion, Engineer King, and the Fourth battalion, Engineer Nasn, The other six battal- tons will have to hold over until to-morrow, Thus over 600 men are still witnout money to-duy. The companies that received their salaries are all those lying south of Christopher street on the west side, and south of Houstun street om the east side, A detail of six men were sent ate time from each company, and tt was near mid- night beiore all of them received their salaries. The paying of the firemen 1s dae entirely to the untiring efforts of Commissioner Vincent ©. King, who was determined that if there were any pos-’ sibility to get the money for the men they should have it. Accordingly, on Thursday afternoon, Commissioner King waited on Mayor Wickeam and besceched him to do something for the reliet of the men. Mayor Wickham said he would be only too happy to do so, Dut he could see no way only to submit to Comptroller Green’s whims, “well,” said Commissioner King, ‘‘General Sha- ler, Commissioner Galway and otiers never signed hyena oof roils or checks; (hey stamped their name why can’t you do it.? The Mayor at Once consented to the stamping process, und $000 one oj bts chiei clerks was to work, and finished his t. at a littie belove seven in the evening, Commissioner King waited till he Saw the last check stamped, and then les to notify the men that they would be paid tue next day. NOW THE FIREMEN PEEL. A visit among the framen yet unpaid disclosed the fact that nine out oj every (weive in each company side witn the Mayor on the question of eiguing of (he Warrants, but many remaiked thas the Mayor would have done himself more credit had be signed them under protest. Considerable secling was also expressed against the President of the Board of Fire Comuilssonei Mr, Perley, that he bad not ralsed the money ‘and advanced It to the men, tt being weil known that he is backed by aiietue insurance companies im tne city, and covid command at a moments notice any favor he desired. It is a well kuown Jact that the late Pnilip W. Bogs, waen a commis- sioner, advanced the pay to the men, no less ‘uaa three wmoaths im succession, and they are surprised tnat Mr. Perley did not take interes: enough in the men to do the same. Bul the jorce ail seemed fuliy satinfied thas Mr. Perley was playing into the hands of the Comp- trolier, and Wiliing to aid in apy Way to place the Mayor in @ faise position, ‘The HERALD reporter meeting several of the members of au Cast side company was acco: by one of tae men, Wuo remarned, “I say, ‘ao Yea pieehe the Mayor has got throug wilh his mark- ng plate. “I don’t believe he can write,” said another; “out l think he might ve abie to make lis mark; other iellows ao it."
