NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, JUNE 14, 1875. —TRIPLE SHEET. "FINANCIAL AND CONMERCIL The Events of the Week—Gos- sip About Stocks, THE FAILURES IN LONDON. Our Gold and Money Markets—A Sharp De- cline in Many ‘ecurities, WALL STREET, } Sunpay, June 13, 18: The events of Wall street during the past ‘week Owe much of their interest to the fact that hey were more than usually perplexing. Tue rapid improvement o/ Lake Shore after its recent re hammering; the forced decline of St, Paul ana Northwest; the doubts expressed with reser- ence to Western Union; the sudden reaction of Union Pacific: these were among the incidents which, by reason of their diversity and effect, un- settled judgment and communicated to the mar- ket a decidedly feverish tone. There is a gene- rally prevalent feeling, however, that many stocks have reached such low prices that a check ‘to the downward tendency may occur at any time. Permanent investors are already being at- tracted, and more securities than many persons suppose are being paid tor and locked up to ‘awalt tue advance that 1s velieved to be inevita- ble. That the railway war has had much todo with the depressing influences which Rave ate tended speculation there is no doubt, and the an- nouncement is peculiarly welcome that within a dew days, provided THE PENDING NEGOTIATIONS between the representatives of the Baltimore and OMo and the Pennsylvania 1aliroads are satisfac- tory to both parties, the strife will cease. The effect will doubtless be felt immediately, for the ability to resume fair and remunerative rates ‘without dangerous competition will necessarily enhance the price of ail $.ocks concerned, increase the earning power of the several lines and encour age wwe hopes of their friends. Among leading railroad men the impression is that during the year a fair business will be done on the Western roads, and that the system of ecouomy that has been enforved by hard times will enable them to make @ reasonably favorable exhibit, The St, Paul report to December 31, 1874, notwithatand- ing the serious interferevce of granger legislation, showed ‘exceptionally latge net earnings. ‘The | same may be said of Rock Island, which, on the Sist of March jast, showed # surplus for the year of $1,109,899, against $843,387 in 1873-4, The Uhi- cago and Northwestern report to May 31 is now expected with much interest, aud the manner in which both its common and preferred siock has lately been pounded is suggestive to not a few of @ purpose to buy the same at THE LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICES that can by book or crook be made, Yesterday, for imstance, a rumor was circulated that the directors had determined to issue $10,000,000 con- vertible bonds. It was without truth, Another story, equally false, was to the effect that the St Paul Company intended to issue new stock. If such statements are a dernier ressort they only serve to illustrate to the cooler headed observers the aesperate character of a struggie which seems to be approaching its end. A meetiog of the Pacific Mall directors was neld yesterday to take {nto consideration the manver in which $2,000,000, more or less, are to be raised for the payment of the company’s debts, The subject was referred to the Executive Committee, it will be remem bered that $500,000 are due to the Panama Rail. road on the 29th of August, on wuich 7 per cent interest, in gold, 1s now being paid. A committee of two, of whom Mr. Rufus Hatch 1s one, was ap- pointed to settie the differences with the latter company aud determine on what basis FREIGHT AND PASSBNGERS abail be hereafter carried. We are also informed t the directors were recently obliged to meke between them to pay ® $100,000 note that became due. Notwithstanding these tacts, however, itis ciaimed that the outlook of the company for the yearis not discouraging. Next to Lake Shore, which took the lead in point of activity, Westerm Union Telegraph was most con- spicuous, President Orton is expected to-morrow from Liverpool, aad a de‘ailed report of the ope- rasions of the company is awaited with great in- terest, There are many surmises as to the edfect of the reduction of tolls upon the earnings for tae mext six months, and of a still further reduction that may be made necessary by competition, put it is given out in various quarters toat before the end of the year certain important combinations will be made that will carry the price of the stock | among tue nineties. This may acvount for tne effort to depress the Ggures uow ana the quict vaying of those who have faita in the future. THE STOCK MARKET, The following Qgures will explain in a more de- tailed manner the course of prices:—Northwest common declined 4 per cent; 644; St. Paul common, 474; preferred, 34 per cent. LONDON FAILURES, It will be recalled that several days ago we briefly alluded to several large {atiures in London, and the unhealthy suspense to which the London money market had been subjected, From the iast number of the London Daily News June 1) we learn shat “the (ailures reported in the first place throw light upon the great weakness in tne tron trade, which has been the subject of a great ad- verse Quctuation during the last two years. Two large manufacturing firms—the Aberdare and Ply- mouth iron companies—with unsecured liabilities Of three-quarters of a mtilion, are obliged to go into liqnidation, and their iatiure entails that of a few smaller houses in the same trade which were as- sociated in their business and financial transac- tions, So far few incidents are more natural or probable at a time like this, If the prosperity of the iron trade in 1871 and 1872 was beyond prece® dent the subsequent fal! in price and consequent joss to all holders of iron bave been immense. Such a fall must bring to light whatever percent- age of improjent management there has been, and the present fallures are, in truth, only part of a series of more or less important stoppages which have been going on ali through the year. The embarrassments have unbappily been great enough to bring with them the stoppage of Messrs, Sanderson & Uo., @ firm of discoant brokers in Lombard street, not occupying, It must be admitted, a more than second rate posl- tion in tha world ot London banking, and whose dimiculties accordingly come nearer home than any fallures, with the exception of that of Messrs, J. ©. Imthurn & Uo, which have occurred in many years, But even a failure of this sort is not a first class event in the money market, and need ental no serious consequences beyond the limits of the embarrassed house itself. It is an event of a totally different character from the failure of a bank, and, from (he peculiar way | in which a discount broker’s busmess ts carried on, comparatively little disturbance ts caused by the disappearance of any second rate estanlish- Ment from the scene. The surprise the discovery bas eccastoned, followed as it nas been by a searching investigation in Lombard street, is one of the best proofs that the blunder stands by itself, and that aothing has occurred to check tue incipient prosperity of trade, or cause amy gen- eral alarm,’?
