The members of the United States Geologica; snd Geographical Survey have assembled at Den- Ver, and the expedition will leave om Monday, the Mhot June, The working of the force 1s divided as follows THE TRIANGULATION DIVISION. The primary triangulation division isin charge of Mr. James T. Gardner, chiel topographer and weographer. Mr, Frank M, Pearsun ts his assis ant, and Mr. ©, Millis and Mr, Robert Adams, Jr., Will accompany this party. Mr. Gardner will extend his primary triangulation over the entire Western and southern portions of the Territory of Colorado, taking in all the section surveyed by and embracing a tract of ‘country, some ten miles in width, on the eastern border of Utah, and asimilar belt on the nortn- ern border of New Mexico. The other division wili finish up the allotted gections designated on the map. THE First DIVISION, The first division consists of Mr. W. H. Holmes, Geologist director and artist; Mr. George B. Onit- tenden, topographer, aud probably Mr. P. S. Braudigee, assistant topographer and botanist. Mr. Holmes takes the place of Mr. A. R. R, Atkin- son, assistaut topographer; Dr. A. ©. Peale, geologist, THE THIRD DIVISION, The third, or San Luis division, 18 in charge of Mr. A. D. Wilson, topegrapher directing; with Dr. F. M. Endlicu, geologist, and Mr. F, Rhoda, as sistant topographer. The 1ourtn division is un- fer the direction of Mr. G. R. Beebler, topo- grapher, with one assistant. In addition to these Givisions there 1s a photographic party under the supervision of Mr. W. H, Jackson, photographer directing; and this brancu of the survey will pro- ceed to the extreme southwest corner of Colorado iato the San Juan country and across into Utab Bs far as the Colorado Rive! Mr. Jackson last year took the first imoressions of those ancient tains which are scatrered so profusely tm this sec- ton, Along the canyon of the Mancos River eépecially he maae this subject # specialty, This season he Will visit some ef the most interesting remains of a great antiquity, and it is heped that many valuable discoveries will be made in regard fo tne habits and domestic lite of the obscure taces that once inhabited this country. A supply srain wili be run irom point to point, meeting the ties at appointea times. Mr. Charles E, Aldrich, quartermaster and executive officer, has been appointea to fill the piace of Mr. James Stevenson, resigned. Mr. A. R. B, Unier, of Baltimore, Will also investigate the sume regions, to render more complete the materials already in their pos- session tor the very elaborate reports they are preparing for the survey. THE SECRETARY OF THE SURVEY. Mr. J. W. Suilivan, the secretary of the survey, ‘Will ve stattoned in Denver, to transact all meces- Bary home business and see to the forwarding of mails at every opportunity, Each party wil be provided with two packers and a cook, With also the necessary saddle and pack animals, it 18 proposed to start out in a body, travelling to- gether probably as far south as Colorado Springs, trom whieh point the several divisions will branch bm in different directions. Tne expedition will re- main in the field until the middle of October or Grat of November. It will be ihe aim of the Heap to publish as oiten as possible accounts of the progress and re- sults of the expedition, togetner with interesting adventures which are experienced by its mem- bers, and all the discoveries among tne rains of Bouthern Colorado and New Mexico will be given in rll from time to time, depending for their regularity, however, upon the accessibility of tue mals. THE MIDDLE PARK OF COLORADO, in order to reach the Miadle Park of Colorado, Starting irom Denver with @ pack train, the best plan is to take @ westerly course, passing through Golden Oiy (the former capital of the Territory) and following the well-beaten trail which leads over the hilis, parallel to Clear Creek. This brings che equestrian to Idaho Springs, a small town situated about forty miles from Denver, im tne valley of Clear Creek, and surrounded by magnifi- tent mountain scenery. ‘ihe place is noted for its oes hot springs, and is rapidiy becoming a be pe and noted summer resert, especially oF mvaiide and tnose afflicted wita ol tases. 1!
