FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Feverish and Unset- tled---Prices Generally Lower. GOLD ADVANCED TO U6 7-8. Money on Call Loans as Usual, with Capital Abundant. WALL STREET, } \ TnuRspay, June 8—6 P, M. ‘The stock market to-day was again feverish and ansetticd, not so much a8 the result of things that have happened as of events expected. The situa- tion is one which few are able to understand, and there few belong to a circle who gather their in- splration from one or two leaders. The latter have long taken thetr cue from the unpromising business attitude of the country and have profited thereby. From-sheir standpoint, and with their Wealth, 1t was easy, weeks ago, to foresee and take advantage of the existing depression. They havé done so; but the question that still reigns ts whetner they intend to stop; whether prices are as low they propose to put them; whether Pacific Mail, Lake Snore, Erie, New York Central and other stock are not likely to be again ham- mered to the misery of those who may be ‘long’’ of the respective securities, ‘ihe chief demoraliz- ig agent to-day was Union Pacific, which opened AL 74% and declimed to 70%, with @& rally 10 73) anda close at 71 Sympathetically this stock has become closely allied to tne restof mar- ket, and there are those who base their judgment concerning GENERAL FEATURES hpon its movements, so that much and sustained | weakness in Union Pactfic {8 more or less likely to affect the course of other prices, Similar re- marks may be made with refereace to Western Union,’ which receded trom 75% to 7344, recover- ing to 7474 and ending at 7414. Notwithstanding street statements te tne contrary the executive committee of the company have recommended the directors to deviare the regular quarterly Mvidend at their meeting next weck. Lake Shore declined from 60% to 58, advanced to $94, and closed at 683. The feeling concerning this stock is not particularly encouraging. Northwesc common opened at 4034, sold ap to 40%, receded to 39% and ended ae othe opening price. The annual ction of the company’s officers took place at Chicago to-day. The following gemtlemen were elected’ directors:—Harvey Kennedy, S. M. Mulls, W. L. Scott, Milton Courtright, W. H. Terry and | J.L. Tenhave. Erie was steady at 17% @ 18, Wabash sold at 94.29% & 934 a8%a9%. Ohio and Mississipp! opened at 2354 and closed at 227%. Pacitic Mell opened at 84%, went down to 32 and ended at 22%. Rock Isiand advanced from 102 to 102% and New York Central from 102 to 103, Banpibal and St. Joseph ciosed at 21, Illinois Cen- | tral at 100%, C., C. and I. C. at 4%.
