GOLD 115 1-2---MONEY EASY Reports Encouraging from Europe---American Sceurities Firmer Abroad. WALL STREET, } Toespay, May 11—6 P. M, The stock market to-day was again under the 7 bammer, and prices were geuverally kept down until toward the close. A reaction then followed, but not to a degree that invited much confidence. Erie continues to be the weak point, and, sym- pathetieally, appears to have extended its influ- ence to every Other stock on the market, whether good or bad, It may go even lower, but there is no reason why it shall drag with it securities that have heretofore beeo regarded worthy of conf- @ence and that’ are to-day upheld by their friends with more than usual faith, It would be improper in this place to cite illustrations, but ® brief survey of the situation will show that the railway men of the couniry are everywhere engaged in adapting business | to the new order of things, Reorganization is taking place. Consolidation, amendment, change, @ recognition Ol the necessities of tne people, greater economy and larger earpiugs—these con- stitute a portion of the elements that are to be watcbed in the near future as among its most POTENTIAL INFLUENCES. If more than single-nanded power were at work at the present moment, or if to natural causes could be traced the existing depression, it mignt not be adfficult to foretell events; but as the market ranges to-aay there is nothing to justify a feeling of gloom or expectations of general disaster, As above indicated, the close of the market was stronger than the opening. Atlan- tic and Pacific Telegraph, which began at 23% and sold down to 23%, advanced to 25% on information that the steamer Faraday had grappled the new cabie, and was successfully approaching our coast.
