“FUNANGIAG, AND COMMEROIL A Slightly Firmer Undertone in the Stock Market. GOLD 1155-8 A 1151-2. Engagements of Coin for To-Morrow—The Prospect of Silver Payments, MONEY EASY AT 2 1-2 A 3 PER CENT. WALL STREET, FRipay, May 7—6 P, M, } The stock market to-day was steadier and a trifle stronger in several of its details, thereby giving encouragement to those who have been predicting and patiently awaiting a change tor the better, The /oundation ts not yet thoroughly firm, however, and time is required to renew confidence, If there be truth In the statements made many securities will materially improve guring the next thirty or sixty days, unless some Qnforseen misfortune occurs that will depress all, Undoubtedly the general market will follow its leaders, and there are no present indications that the latter wiil be permitted to decline to Buch a dangerous extent as to provoke wide- Spread disaster, Tuere is no reason to change the opinion heretofore expressed that a large short interest exists, anid when, as prices begin to advance sharply, this short interest 1s protected, We May reasonably expect @ much more active speculation than at present. Ri wed interest sttacies Lo this market In consequence of the un- expected strength it manifests in the face of Tre: ary sales. it must be borne in mind, however, that the shipments are considerable and that de- pletion naturally affects the vaiue of that which slef behind, It may be remarked incidentaily shat more or less of hesitation exists among some of the bankers who intended to ship goid to-mor- tow. It is probabie, however, that the export will amount to $1,100,000, The principal shipper is the firm of Belmont & Co., which is understood bo have engaged $600,000.
