THE COURTS. Tweed Given Only Ten Days to Answer. THE RING REAL ESTATE. John Powers, keeper of the Ward’s Island Lu- natic Asylum, who was indicted for murder in the first degree for kill.ng tne patient De Vernon, was yesterday, on applicatien of tis counsel, Mr, W le iam F. Howe, balled in the Court of General Ses- sions. Officer Charles Williamson, of the Twenty-sev- enth precinct, who was committed by Coroner Woltman to the ‘tombs without bail for killa Jonn Campbell, was brought before the Supreme Court, Chambers, yes'erday, on a writ of haveas corpus sued out by his counsel, Mr. Wiham F, ‘Howe, for the purpose of securing his release on bail, His bail was fixea at $5,000, which was promptly furnished, after which be was released from custody. James L. Adams and William Martin exchanged property worth $235,000, Adams paid Calvin Slade $3,750 on account of brokerage, leaving $2,125 due, which he re‘used to pay on the ground that Slade was also the broker of Mr. Martin, Suit was brought in supreme Court, Circuit, before Judge Donohue, by Siade against Adams for the alleged balance due him. The triai of Lawrence Noonan, charged with participating in stealing a safe containing money @n¢ bonds of the ageregate value of $70,000 from the oMlce of the Adams Exprese Company last January, was continued yesterday in the General Bessions, before Recorler Hackett, Assistant Dis- trict Atiorney Russell appearing lor the prosecu- tion and Mr. Wiiam F. Howe for the prisoner, The jormer resnmed his cross-examination of Noonan, which wus lengtny and searching. A number of questions propounded by the manager o! Pinker. ton’s Detective Agency at two examinations of Noonan after the robbery, and answers given rel- ative to the transaction, were read 1o the accused, and to the query Whether he gave such answers, Noonan repiied, “I don’t know whether | saia so or not.” Mr, Cummings, tae stenographer who recorded tne testimony. and Mr. Bange, who cou- ducted the examination, testified that the tran- script of Noonan’s testimony was correct.
