FINANCIAL AND CONDERCUE Recovery from Depression—An Encouraging Outlook. THE EVENTS OF THE WEEK. The Movement of Money, Gold, Foreign Exchange and Bonds. WALL STREET, } Sunpay, Aprii 18, 1875. In Commercta! and financial circles the events of tne past week have not presented any new or Mtartling Jeatures, They corroborate in vartous ‘8, however, the opinion which is beginning to nd general expression. that the country has en- tered upon a course of slow but steady improve- ment in business, and that the worst results of the panic are happily among the things of the past, It isnot always easy, when depression fol- jor great collapse, to determine the period at which the ebb ceases and the influx begins, for the tide will oiten have set in strongly long before the change has become apparent to every eye. But we are now in the midst of evidences, which leave little room for doubt that the natural buoy- @noy of the resources of the American people 1s every where exerting its infiuence in STIMULATING TRADE and giving renewed power to every business nerve that bas heretolore sutfered from paralys! The late commerce of the United States received ite character from the war. ‘The present business is taking shape and character trom peace. One was based oo an irredeemable paper currency. The other is being built up on a convertible currency, which, ‘he time approaches for the resumption Of specie payments, must materially chanye the Nature ol contracts and affect the measurement bf all values, Already 1s observable greater con- Bervatism in the management of their afairs by | Merchants and manufacturers. There are fewer failures to record every month. Spring, though late, is opening with fair promises to jobbers and retalers, and on all sides are io be heard the busy notes of preparation for & period of more than usual activity. It is true that many of the ratiroads do not show the large earings which were recordea two or three years ago, snd that in eral instances these corporations have hecome entangled in debt gnd passed into the hands of receivers, The: however, are only netural results of inflation, speculation, Overloading with watered stock and meut, aud are not to be taken into ume when new laws and effects are constantly manifesting their operation, THE SPECULATIVE MARKET im stocks has been active. The privcipal changes of the week were in Union Pacific, which deciined irom 73% to 69%, but at the close the stock re- covered to 72!¢ on favorabie returos irom the traMe department, which siow an increase of More than $200,000 for the first filteen days of April, comparea with the earnings of the same Reriod in 1874, Pacific Mull receded from 43% to 42%, but advanced to 4434 yesterday. The course Of this stock was perplexing to the majority of operators, and the purposes of those who ,are be- hind the curtain are full of mystery. Panama, moved irom 121 to 128%, the highest being the last quotation, #0 43/4, and the preierred {rom 58% to 57. In the late dealings there was a partiai recuvery. St. Paul common was moderately active, but yrelded to the preva:ling tendency by decilaing from 39% to 37%. Tne close, however, Was made at 38%. Quicksilver went down to 18%, but closed at 20}. The comuon ended at 29, alter selling at 2734, Wapasn receded from 16 to 14%, but closed firm op the expectation of an early movement, at 1534. we rn Union fuctuated between 773 and 7834. ending at 77%.
