FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Stocks Stronger and Busi- ness Active MONEY ON CALL 5 AND 3 PER CENT, Gold Firm at 114 8-4 Without * Excitement. GOVERNMENTS FIRM, WALL STREBT, } WEDNESDAY, April 7—6 P. M. The stock market was moderately active to-day, but undisturbed by any startling features or by the usual rumors which are invented to give zest tothe speculative sitaatidn. Tbe chief surprise pf the moment was a sudden and, to the majority of operators, au unexpected advance in Atlantic ind Pacific Telegraph, which opened at 2435, quickly advanced to 26%, and almost as quickly receded to 25}. From this point the movement upward was ady, Uatilat the close it sold at 27% a 27}. The rise is said to be due tothe de- Parture of the steamer Fareday and the possi- | bility that in the event of success in completing the new cabiea consolidation will be made with Western Union. ‘This, however, is among the Svents of the future, and in the absence of Mr. Orton nothing 1s likely to be done except by the apeculators. Pacific Mali signalized itself by drop- ping to 4134 soon alter the opening, but recovered to 43% on buyers’ option, closing at 433s a 4345. There was considerable speculation concerning the future arrangements between Pacific Mail and Panama, and it was said that agents of the latter company were large purchasers of the stock; hence its rise; but we failed to trace these state- ments to a truthiul source, Western Union opened at 77%, with large sales, and gradually advanced to 76% at tne close. Wabash advanced | to 1634 and closed at 153%. Union Pacific began at 704s, advanced with various fluctuations to 71, closing at 705s. 1 was noteworthy that the move- | ment in this stock to-day was less irregular and, rapid and confined witvin one per cent, Erle” | moved trom 28% to 304, ending at 30, Lake Shore was steady at 73%. St. Paui common maintained | ite firmness and encouraged holaers by advancing | to 0934 and ending at this figure. The preierrea stock reached 584. Onio and Misstssippt sold at 28% a 285, 8.253%.
