A large failure was recorded to-day in the sugar trade. ‘ihe HERALD representative immediately waited on the firm whose suspension was r ported, Messrs, Aldama & Fulier, whose office is at No. 107 Wail street, and received irom Mr. Ful- ler the following particulars:—lhey have su pended witn liavilities amounting to abont $400,000. Their assets are about $300,000 In cash and other securities—real estate and otherwise— | amounting to nearly $700,000, a portiOa of which is locked up just now in an unprofitable sugar: | refinery in Brooxlyo, aud the bad odor of sugar paper has prevented the negotiation of suMficient sums to carry the firm through their troabies. Mr. Miguel Aidama bas been the agent of the Cubans in this country, and is said to be largely identified with ther cause, It is not known whether any complications growing out of this political alliance have anything to do with tne firm's trouples. | Aidama & Falier are the successors of Brunje, | Ockershausea & Co, whose establisument at the foot of Canal street was hired by the new concern, To mect thelr necessities they pro- ceeded to build a iarge reflnery at the Atiantic Decks, Which they ave expecting to occupy on the ist May, and on which they have expended within the past year, in cash, about $400,000, They ask an extension of two, four and six months, which their creditors will probably ac ord them. There | Js hO question, however, bat that the disturbing element has been in the GOLD MARKET. ‘The premiam advanced yesterday to 116%, and | | after business hours calis were treely bid tor at 117 to-day. Sterling exchange was completely demoralized and the lowess rates of this year were made, There did not seem to be apy unusual pressure on cash gold, and the evident efforts of mere Habis to cover their saies of “short gold havavay caused the suvance in the premium Ji Reels 10 be on CULrage ‘iat a ew banded spec. THE NORTH CAROLINA BOND CASE settled yesterday by the deposit of $425,000 | with the clerk of Judge Donohue’s court; but it te understood that aa appeal will at once be taken, and Messrs. L. P. Bayne & Co. claim that their ad- | vances of $30,000 in cash and alarger sum due for | commissions must be paid before the bonds can be released to the claimants, There is a nice question of the responsibiiity of contractors in- volved in this suit, and the dectsion of the Su preme Court wiil be looked for with interest. THE CATHOLIC PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS TO BR MERGED IN THE COMMON SsCHOOLS—THE FIRST REPORT OF FAILURE FROM THE AGENTS OF TRUANCY—RULES FOR THE NAUTI- OAL SCHOOL. The Board ef Education met yesterday afters noon, President Neilson in the chair, The Superintendent and agents of truancy ap- pointed under the Compulsory law made thetr first report. The total number of cases investi- gated were 534, Of this number 393 were kept at home by sickness and otner causes, leaving 141 cases of truants and non-attendants, of which 114 have been placed at school by the several agents, Jeaving 37 still in the hands of the agents. It has been jound impossible to obtain the correct names and residences of the children who are found wandering about the streers, and but little has been accomplished toward getting this class of children into the schools. They seem to be ‘well posted” as to the law and either evade or reiuse to answer the ques- tions put to tnem. Nothing can be done until the census shall have been completed. The re- port recommends the reopening of the even'ng schools in order to enable factory children and others to procure their certificate of fourteen weeks of schooling. THE CATHOLIC PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, A communication from representatives of Cathoe lic parochial schools was read, requesting the Board to appoint a committee to meet a commit~ vee representing their iuterests to consider on what terms the parocital schools may be admitted to the benefits of the public school system, subject to itslawsas regards tne course of instruction, the methods of discipune and the geu- eal management im such manner as may be agreed upon. It ree ferred, also, to the fact that s union somewhat similar to that here proposed existe in many parts of this State and in some otuer states and that the results have Leen so satis actory that Protestants and Catholics alike approve and Bupport it. “As the uudersigned and those whom tney represent have paid and still pay their {uli snare of tne taxes that go to the support of the common schools they hope your honorabie body will iavorably cousider their request and take Such action as may ulti- jead to greater harmony in a work such vast importance as that of ain” education.” Toe signers are William uinn, Vicar General; Jeremian Devin, J.
