Superintendent Walling and the detectives were engaged yesterday in bunting up the details of the recent robbery committed on the Adams Express Company. ‘Three men, Daniel Hovey, a driver; John Sweeney, a cherk, and James Drew, said to be implicated in the theft, are now tn confinement at the Central Office, and the pdtice are endeavoring to obtain from them information that wiil lead te ‘he recovery of ail the property taken. The rob- Dery 18 said to have been commitied on Sunday, the 24th ult., and the amount taken in the neigh- borhood of $200,000, On tnat day Hovey and Sweeney went to Jersey City to tuke charge of some saies containing bonds and money packages that had arrived there from tie counury. METHOD OF THE ROBBERY. The express agent who had accompanied tne safes on the train handed them over to these men. ‘There were in all nineteen boxes, and they were supposed to contain packages of money and other vaiuables sent [rom the various agencies through- out the Southern States to the central office in this city. One ol these boxes was placed in charge Of the agent at Ricomond, Va., and hein turn trausierred it with the otuers to Hovey and Sweeney, and the supposition is that it was given by them to the man Drew, on the way from Jersey City to New York, as it was not delivered at its proper destination with tue other safes, Hovey signed the agent’s. receipt buok, at Jersey City, for nineteen saies, and obtained a receipt im his own book at the office in New York for the same number, altvough wu was = after- ward discovered tiat he nad only de- lavered eighteen, ‘He managed to receive the receipt from Mr. Sullivan, Wo Wag in charge of the receiving depariment at the central office, counyng one Of tie DoxXes twice over. in the burvy of business Mr. Sullivan did Dot detect tue deception, und was envied to turow the immediate responsibility trom bumsell, On-the lolluwiug Monday worning, When it was discovered that the saie irom Kicamond was not im the receiving vault, @ search wus instantly in- stituted, but no trace of THR MISSING BOX could be found. Hovey sioutly maintained he had deiivered it at tue office, and presented als re- ceipt book tb proof 01 bis Corvectuess, The agent al Jersey City Was satisiied be nud passed it over with the others, apd so the matter resied, the case causing the greatest consiernation und mys Lery among ail those employed at the oitice, Next day Mr. Hoey, the manager, cailed iu the ser ices of @ private wetective ageucy, but they being unable to cope witu the dificuities Ol the case It was hauded over to the regular police. ‘ihe private detectives bad quesuoued Hovey, Sweeney and Sullivan, but could get noth ing satisiactory irom them. Hovey presented nit check-book as belore, aud beid tuat ve could not be lovked On a8 responsibie iu View o/ that, If hao been ascertained, Lowever, (Hat he wus living in an eXtravagact manner up Lown, and that drew some suspiciou vn him, The police pegun wuere the private detectives left off. they arrestec Hovey and Sweeuey, trusting through this t¢ friguten somebody who would reveal sometuing. Fortunate, their carcu.ations were not allogetoes out of the Way; ior the next uay A LARGE PARCEL OF BONDS was handed them by & poor woman, whose chud | found them in the street. These bonds haa uu- douvtedly been given by one vi tie men to a Woe Tuan, and sue, tearing the possession of tiew woud arag ber into be trouhe, disposed of Liem in that way. The police immediaiely turned ®agucious, and prevended they had uneurtued | them after a great deal Of intrigue and lavor. Ounce unuer lock sud key, it Was easy to bring to ligut numbers of tings to Hovey’s disadvantage. He was kuown to be a gamoier, and had, 1s was Was said, given $1,000 in money tow ceriatn wo | Man Ou the night of the rovvery. It was suown against him, too, that, immediately aiter being called for examination by the private detectives, ué resigned his position im the express company | He Was indignant at veiug suspected, aud wi thal | the police wisely pretend is positive assurance | that they have the right persons. The most pro 1ound,secresy 18 Maintained, and nothing but tht incessant comings aud goiugs of the Superinteud ent betrays the Importance Oi the matter ou Land At first the prisoners were piaced in dilfereut sta | tton houses so that no one should suspect then | arrest, Their houses were tuen searcued, bai nothing very astonishing was discovered. ‘Inen i: was considered advisable to trausier them to tht Central Uuice, so that the Superintendent could COMMUNICATE FREELY with them, ana on Friday night they were taker there in charge of three oj the detectives, At though the poitce had arrested the men who they were satisfied were the purloiners of the saie, the) Could not show any evidence that pointed direcily to them, nor have they yet discovered any. They have been working tremendously, as tuey would Make it appear, op the case, but so far no evr dence has come to light. Six oi the best detec tives attached to Superintendent Wailling’s com mand were entrusted with the working up of tue | Getails, but they were apparently not suMllcient tt the Superintendent's opinion, so he went to work himselil, seeming to have no confidence in any ability outside his own. It was rumored yesterday that a second package of bonds had been discovered on Saturday nigit and that the woman whom Hovey appears to have | been living With Wa arrested, but the acuons 0) the poilce give no color to the story, On Saturday | the sister and motuer of one of the prisoners cailed on Superintendent Waliing and asked to ue allowed to see the prisouers, but they were re- | fusea fe patenicee, ‘They then went and consulted A. Uakey Hall, thetr counsel, and he seut | them back with a demand that the prisoners | should be at once taken bejore @ mayisirate and | arraigned, a8 the law required, Superintendent | Walling would not listen to that, for be cousidered | that he had compiled With the law, and leit secare | on that point. | MANY EXAGGERATED STORIES have been put into circulation about the amount contained in the lost sale, but it 1s almost certain tt heid no more than $200,000; much Of this was tn 5 Curities that caphot now be put upon wwe market, aud of course are of No valde to the thieves. The theories of the police that the safe was taken trom the wagon between Jersey City and New York, delivered at some point between those two paces by Hovey, are undoub:ed!y tne correct ones, but the bungling ‘ot the police has made & successiul work- ing Up of the case now Oat o/ the question. Hovey and Sweeney coufd never have disposed of te safe ahd it¥ contents without accomplices, and | thesé were the men the police should have ou- deavored to discover. That they were BXPERIBNCED CRIMINALS there can fen no doubt, and that the largest share of the proceeds Of the robery shouid be found win them Was more than evident. Hovey, Sweeney and Drew i{ allowed to run tinder surveulauce would have been sure to reveal the others, and the police would tiren have succeeded in entrapping the entire gan F. They would likewise bave se- cured some evidence and would have been ep re Utled 10 commendation from the Public. A lever of arrest is one of Superintendent Waliing's great- est faults as a policeman, and another o1ng We vo cases of tote Kind a8 @ detective instead of re- taining bis p on at the head of the department. It King, Lyo ites Eider, Macdougal and Silleck are not competent to do the lithe tiat has been done in the present instance, the Supermienden’ would be of litle use.
