The explanation of the movement ‘has beeh repeatedly given in this colamn, and there is no reaéon, ih view of all the col- lateral circumstances which contrioute their \nfluence at home and abroaa to change the opinion concerning the price either now or in the immediate future. The presence of im- porters in the street, the large legitimate buying that has taken place, the continued loss of the Bank of England, and the expectation that the bank directors will to-morrow be forced to in- Crease the rate of discount, are the salient points that have been seized upon by the active operators ofthe bosrdas a justification jor their present action in advancing prices. Wepnespay, Feb. 3—6 P. M. ‘The sudden and radical advance in the gold pre- mium to-day exertea a marked influence in some | departments of trade, and in some cases stimu- lated rather more demand for merchandise, not- withstanding the very general regret which found expression in view of the apparent further de- parture from “specie payments” thus foreshad- owed. The rise in gold was very generally cited a8 @ striking commentary upon the upwisdom of Congressional action toaching matters of finance Guring the past ten years, and served to reconcile many conservative minds not al- ready reconciled to the changed com- plexion of Congress w the near fu- ture. It would seem to be scarcely possible for Congtess to do less for the good of the country than hag been done of late years, and it ts hoped that the next Congress may prove a decided tmprove- ment on Its predecessor. Merchandise wos quite gene- rally firm to-day, and in some cases prices were higher. On ‘Change flour was dull. Wheat was dull, and in buyers’ favor, the rise in gold/boing offset by the advance in treights, so that scarcely anything was done. Corn was dullat first, but subsequently reacted, ad- vanced ana closed strong. Oats were firm. Whiskey was Jower, Hut fairly active. Pork was quiet and pominal. Lard wasin demand and firmer. Freights were slightly better for berth accommodation, but con- tinued quiet. Groceries quiet and rather unsettled; Petroleum was fitmer, butthe market remained quict. Coming Contest of the Oarsmen of All Nations on the Schuylkill. Aquatic Celebration of the Centennial. PHILADALPHIA, Feb. 3, 1875. Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the great American Centennial Exposition to be held at Philadelpnia in 1876 will be the aquatic contests on the Schuylkill, the arrangements for which are now being made upon the grandes! scale. The proposition for holding a series of in ternational and intercoilegiate boat races isby n¢ means & new idea, but was spontaneous with the propoaition to celebrate in an appropriate mannet tme centenary of American independence, ant if ap to this hour the general reading public have been kept in ignorance of tue scheme it is becansé the mavagers were unwilling that anything should be made known uwatil ali the tnitiatory steps had been perfected, TUK RESPONSE FROM ABROAD. During the autumn of last year the Commodore of the Scbuylkill Navy, Mr. Jamea M, Ferguson, though ostensibly leaving the country for another eause, lived for 3 long time in the principal cities of England and France for the sole pure pose of visiting representative rowing associa- tions, with the view oi awakening that enthusi- asm among them in reference to the Exposition which would lead them to visit Philadeiphia dur. ing the centennial year ana measure oars with their rival amateur oarsmen for the championship of she world. Contrary to his expectations he found a mani, fest willingness upoa the part of ali the associae tions and ciubs he visited to participate in tne international struggle and received assurances of interest in the scheme !zom the Jollowing clubs m= LONDON CLULS TO LB PRESENT.
