Without the fuel our people will freeze, snd without the necessary forage our teams will not be in’ condition to do the spring loughing, and therefore will prevent both plant. ng and harvesting. The committee 1s also in need of large quantities Of seeds for spring planting. Contributions of money, clothing or other neces- faries will be promptly acknowledged and for- Warded if sent to G, V. RICKSECKER, Agent Kunsaa Relief, No. 317 Broadway, N. Y. CARS FOR THE WORKING GIRLS, To THE EDiTor op THE HERALD:— As the question of rapid transit seems as far from solution as ever (nearly a month having elapsed and nothing done by the Legislature), I have to suggest that action be taken at the earliest moment to reform the present miserable system of transporting passengers in this city. It certainly is outrageous that butchers and drovers are compelled by the authorities to afford better accommodation for brutes than is obtainable in the horse cars for human beings; and surely while Women, children and men are packed together like swine dally, without the slightest redress, one cannot regard the action of Mr. Bergh in pro- curing room for dumb animais in any other than a Quixotic light. The Board of Aldermen, however, gtill retain power over most of the city railroads, and I would urge upon them the importance, the necessity, of passing some act of enforcement re- quiring the companies to furnish during certain hours of the day cars exclusively for females. For | instance, say irom six to mine in the morning and from irom five to eignt iu the evening, every third car to be for females only, doubtless be differentiy reguiated to better advuan- tage. They are merely suggestive on my part. ‘The object I have in view is to afford accommoda- tion for women generally, Working girls in par- lcular, and to protect them froin the insalts to which they are too often subjected while riding in the infamous sweat-boxes furnished by many of the city railroad companies, i any valid objection can be raised tothe above arrangement I would be glad to hear it stated. Of course the companies willdemur, it won’t pay! Nothing ever pays in the way of accommodating the puvlic; Dut sooner or later these monopolists must be made to feel that there are other things to be considered besides the payment of dividends. Mr. Editor, [ am one Of those who have faith that ultimately our street railroads will be managed directly by ‘the city and that the existing evil will be entirely removed. That period, however, may be in the far future, and until it arrives it is proper that we should govern our public conveyances for the public accommodation. Therefore, | supmit my Proposition to the Common Council, hoping it may receive their prompt and favorable attention, and Iwould Le to the mai gent nightly witnesses to the distressed condition of those working girls, who, from not being able to take the cars at their various termini, or who get on anywhere in West Broadway, Canal or Chatham streets, to urge, so far as it isin their power, the adoption of some measures to make ‘the raliroad compantes supply vehicles for the ex- clusive comiort and convenience of their female passengers. BRAKESPEARE, New YORK, Jan. 25, 1875, A NEW LINE OF STEAMERS. Notwitnstanding the general depression ¢om- Plained of in business circles, particularly among steamship people, another new line of steamers has just been establishea betwen this port and England. Messrs. Wilson, Sons & Co., of Hall, England, have determined to run a line between their town anda New York, the first vessel—the Colombo—to sail from the other side January 30, and to be followed by the Virago and Yeddo, These ships are all of 8,000 tons purthen and 900 horse power, and have been running heretofore in the West Indies, It 1s designed to land the cabin passengers by ‘this line going from this port at Southampton, if they so desire. From Hull the Messrs. Wilson have Vessels running weekly to Aberdeen, Dundee, Leith, Newcastle, Yarmouth, London, Hamburg, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Dunkirk, Got- tenburg, Stettin, Copenhagen, Konigsberg, Dant- zc, Riga, Revel, Croustadt and Stockholm, and every two weeks to Bergen, Slavanga, Bordeaux, Gonstantinople, ‘iriest, Odessa, Messina,. Palermo and Venice. * Shouid the line to this country prove successful the comp: ny will put on a number of larger and laster vessels, having every accommodation fora Jarge number of cabin passengers. The agents of the line in this city are Messrs, Charles L. Wright & Co., of No, 56 South street. ‘\HARLES MARTIN NE HOUSE, DECEASED, —PUR- stant to an act of Parliament made and passed tn the twenty-second and twenty-third years of the reign of hor present Majesty, entitled ‘An act to further amend the law of property and to reliove trustees,” no- tice ts hereby given that the creditors and all persons having claims or demands against the estate of Charles Martin Newhouse, late of Kgerton Villa, Heywood, in the county palatine of Lancaster, England, cotton spin- ner, deceased (who died Intestate at the Royal Infirm- er, in the 6a of Augast istered estate letters Were on the 4th day of December, 1873, the undersigned, Francis Sfairy of tne Duchy of Majesty er fi 4, county, a sy Hon gran me, atta 4} cus ne ane be 3 ae aaneaster, tor the uss of Her jesty in rignt of aid duchy), are to send in the demands to me, the said Ker, at the Duchy of Lancaster office, Lanoaster place, Strand, London, England, on or betore the 5th day of July, 1875, at the expiration of which time the assets of the said deceased will be paid over, or otherwise distributed or appropriated, having regard to the claims only of which I, the sald Francis Whitaxer, shall then have had notice, and that! will not be able t Pp Tghall not have had notice for such assets, or any part thereol, so paid over, dis- tnbuted or pyres 3 Dated this bth day of Jannary, 1875.
