NEW YORK HERALD, THURS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Stocks a Trifle Firmer on Smaller Business. WALL STREET WITHOUT FEATURES Money Easy, Gold Steady at 112 1-4 and Bonds Firm, WALL STREET, WEDNEsDAY, Jan, 20—6 P. M. ‘The course of prices in the stock market to-day Indicated a somewhat improved feeling, the fluctuations not being so sharp aa usnai and the in- Quences less disturbing. Erie, Pacific Mail and Wabash showed the principal losses compared with closing prices yesterday; but these were not of an unexpected character. Sympathetic causes, anfavorable news, inherent weakness or @ heavy pressure by some bold operator may produce simi- lar effects on any stock; and hence, in view of the slight signs of improvement elsewhere recorded, «he market need not be spoken of discouragingly. THB RANGE OF PRICRS, Western Union opened at 74, advanced \, re- ceded to 73% and closed at 73%. Pactfic Mail sold at Sat the beginning, but during the day declined to 3346; It ended at 337%. Atiantic ana Pacific Tel- graph exhibited unexpected elasticity by moving Qp irom 233, to 25:4 and maintaining a fair show of strength at 23, at tne close. St. Paul was moderately active and sold at 37% a 38%. Wabash Geacended in the scale from 15% to 145, but re- covered to 153%. Hannibal and St. Joseph sold at 24a 2433. Union Pacific opened at 36%, lost 34 per tent in the course of business, but at the close re- covered to the opening tigure. Northwestern com- mon old at 44% a 45 and ended at 44%. Ubio and Mississipp! commenced at 23%, advanced to 293% apd ended at the opening price. Other changes will be tound in the tables follow. Wronespar, Jan. 20—6 P. M. The merchandise markets were st))i character- ized by irregularity, although there was more dis- position todo business evinced in certain quar- ters. On ’Change the chief fearure of interest was an increased firmness in breadstuffs, without much activity. Flour remained dull. Wheat was sought alter to some extent for speculation and export; in view of which the market was Ormer and petter prices were obtained, particulars of | which may be found below. Corn was dali and im obuyer’s favor. Oats were also = dal, Whiskey was easy. Pork was dull, nominal and easy. Lard was quiet and easy all through the day, Freights were quiet but steady. Cotton was less active and easier for “spot,” with futures selling lower. Gro- ceries were quiet and without perceptible change. Pe- troleam was dull amd nominal in the absence of business. Naval stores were inactive, bat vaiues nominally the same. Correz.—The feature of interest was the arrival of the steamer South America, with 11,121 bags. The samples were not out upto alate hour, and consequently no business was consummated. The tone of the market, however, was barely steady, and itis not improbable | that a lower range of values will be established, unless | the duty question becomes of more importance than at | vhe moment. Mild grades were unchanged anc quiet. | We quote :—Rio, ordinary cargoes, 173¢¢. a 17%c.; tarda, | 184c. @ 18ige.; good do, 18Kc. w 19c.; prime do., 19%c. a | 19!sc.; extreme range for low, I7}¢c. a 20%c.; Java, gov- ernment bags, 26c. a 28c.; do. grass mats, 26c. a 29c.; Ceylon, 19¢. @ 2lc.; Maracaibo, 18}4c. a2lc.: Laguayra, 19c. @ 20%c.; Jamaica, 1c. a 20c.; St. Domingo, Ic. a ITigc.; Porto Rico, 18, @ 20c.; Costa Rica, 18¢. a 20Ke.; Savaniila, $c. a 2ic.; Curacos.
