10 AMUSEMENTS. THE FIFTH AVENUE THEATRE. Under the title of Was produced at thi has astroug family li from their defects, There ts a fair amd moderately successiul effort to tel! dramatically @ story of the adections, but the iucidents are arranged more with @ view to broadness Of edec. than as an ex- position of the sabvtic piay of human passion. ‘The story on which “Women of the Day" ws long separated lovers are about to be Marnea when a younger aod fairer wo- man wins the affections of Frank Laidlaw, @ gallant United States naval eficer, who suddenly discovers from public rumor and otherwise that bis old iove is & woman Df the world and not a tender rosebud such as Wis fond imagibation bad pictured her. It is worthy of remark that this hallucination so suddenly dispelied has subsisted during the lady's married jie, Under its influence, as soon a8 a iree, be has offered her his band iu addition to the heart which she is supposed ulways to bave had sa/e in her keeping. On the appearance of Ciara Ho- man, bowever, the uaval officer finds out that he dhas been sailing in @ fog. Like @ sensioie jellow he takes soundings, finds out the trae lati- tude and longitude in which bis heart is, and re- solves to make & voyage to China instead of marrying his oid love, as he nad promised. This is the condition in which we find things at the rising of the curtain, though the naval bero | bas not yet deciared himself, and may be said to be still sauing under lalse colors, Once the curtain goes up however the decks are cleared jor action, and Frank brings his letters neatly tied up in @ bundie, returns them in @ funereal manner and tells of his changed mtention, and the new craft that bas mean- while hove in sight as well as his intention of setting saul tor the flowery land. Adelaide Liv- ingston, the abandoned damsel, shows at this | polut that she 1s 4 woman of the world, and as she must give up Frank she resolves to do it graceiully. She thereiore requests her faithless lover to stay at nome and bot inconvenience himself on her uccount, She even asks that ne will forget all about their engagement, and invites him to bring the object oi nis affections to ver bouse im order that the scorned Miss Livingston may win | ber confidence and become her bosom Jmend. Like a true and delicate gentleman of the society play schoo, Mr. Frank Laidlaw, United States Navy, accepts the proposi- ton, and the two ladies become busom Iriends be- fore they utter half a dozen words, Clara Homman, the tngénue, is of course keptin complete | ignorance of the reiatious of her lover ana the woman into whuse society she is thrown. ‘fhe latter has theresore tuli opportunity to work out the designs she has formed against the peace of the unsuspecting Clara. She suggests tne postponement of the marriage, and tewpty the youns, lady with the prospect of opera, routs, alis, &c., and all that glittering pageant which | ts cailed society life. The youny giri falis into the trap and aecides on sending away her lover for a SIX months’ cruise, an arrangement to which he freely consents. So "much is accomplished when the Curtain falis on the first act. When we meet , and in the meantime tne youn; Jady has become 24 very accomplisued “society woman,” bat still possesses enough O/ the ireshness ol her innocent days tu regret the change that bas been wrought in her character. So jar she bas done notuing more indiscrect than mingie witha society that a pure-minded, sen- Bilive gim ought surely toshrink irom. Butina Moment of pique against a foreign rival who has spoken slightingly ot herselt @nd companions, she commits the indiscre- — tion of receiving and encouraging the a@ttentions of a designing gentleman, who is at- tracted by ner beauty aud fortune. in order to secure his conquest this new lover (Mr. Theodore Prescott) is guilty of the cowardice of compromis- ing the fair name of the woman whose hand ne ®eeks. Having done so he asks ner to warry him, ud on ber rejusal be tells her the unworthy sub- tertage he has used to compromise ber and points out that the only way to suve her reputation 13 to Marry nim. Toe young girl is overwneimed with tand shame. At this critical moment Frank diaw returns and finds his betrotued wiie weep- ing in the drawing room of the Saratoga hotel He naturally enough is somewbat surprised. Then he everywhere bears the name of hr. Pres- cott coupled with Miss Hoffman’s. He Jearns that Mr. Prescott has been seen leaving her cottage early in tue morning, and a meddie- some old mother-in-iaw further excites bis ire by imiorming bim that Fiora Hoffmen has been co- quetting with ber sov-in-iaw, diajor Steele—a statement which has no fvundation im fact. bere spvears at this joint some a ‘hat vice is about to triumph, put . = would be altugether too much ke 2 of everyday lue Major Steele and Mrs. Kilimeyer come to tne rescue and under- take ‘o convince Laidlaw that the damaging rumors about Clara are without foundation.
