NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1874.-TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCL AND COMMERCIAL =. The Stock Market Irregular |’ and Feverish. Monev on Call 21-2and3 Per Cent. Gold 110 7-8—Bonds Steady, with Small Dealings. wapwespay, Dox 6 P. iu} “The stock market to-day continued to exhibit vthe influence of uncertainty, which bas been per- «ceptible since the beginning of the week. Appar- ently there is a want of sustaining power, or, in - other words, of faith in the prospects of the near fusure. The symptoms of clique manipulation are #0 evident in botn pall and bear circles that out- siders are deterred from making investments, while’ the members of the Board are forced to be * content with operations in which the turns are » quick and the profits small. Doubtless the yet ‘ anknown character of Congressional legislation 0 financial subjects has added to tne perplexity of the street and superinduced more or less of caution, but the ruling causes of disturbance are generally local in character. Gold is obedient to ~ tofuences that are more natural. Walle ite price may recede in consequence of large sales or of ac. cumulations by the Bank of England the outflow from this country at once produces firmness and ‘ offets the effect of mere speculation. At the present moment, however, either its strength or weakness does not permanently inQuence the operations of the stock market. The :@indertone in the latter at the close to-day inal- cated some improvement, especially with refer- ence to Western railroads, which, although they «May not show an encduraging increase of bust- ness, represent a section of the country trom ~ which favorable reports bave been received. In ’ otner items, however, tnere was” a loss, Pacific mail closing 5 off and Erie % per cent. Notwitn- standing the appareutly favorable report of West- ern Union and its declaration of a 2 per cent divi- dena for the quarter, the stock sold lower than it did yesterday. For future deliveries the market was rather firmer at the commencement, iu sympathy with the tmproved tone of advices from the other side, and an advance of 1-82c. & 1-16c. was effected upon the early sales This improvement, however, was lost later in the day, wien short noticed went begging at 14c., and receipts, though comparatively light, were larger than expected, ‘while some report was circulated of a significant tardi- nesson the part dtacertain house to respond to for margin.
