8 NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1874.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Fluctuating and Feverish. GOLD STEADY AT 1111-8 A Further Advance Expected Be- cause of Shipments. MONEY 31-2 A 4 PER CENT, Bonds Generally Firm, with Mod- erate Demand. WALL SrRest, } WEDNESDAY, Nov, 1s—6 P, M, St the opening of the stock market to-day prices assumed a lower tone, the decline ranging from 3s 0 14s percent. Later, however, more strength manufested, but without recovery to recently quoted figures. Atthe close stocks were weak, Speculators are looking around for causes on which to maintain a bull movement, but they are met by Many facts that discourage the attempt The great feature of the day was Lake Shore, of which 90,000 shares changed hands, Yet in the face of this extraordinary business it will be seen that it advanced only 's per cent on its opening price, which was 81, and at the close tumbled down to 80%. The incident tdicates both the character of the market and the difficulty with ‘which the late favorite is sustainea, The question now asked 18, whether if it should break 1t will not sympathetically affect other stocks. If 80, its mis- fortune may prove to be the beginning of a general bear movement. lt must be said, how- ever, that, for the moment, the cheaper lines of ®ecurities are commanding attention; and that they show 4 disposition to cut loose from their higber priced sisters. Northwest common, Ono and Mississippi, Sc. Paul, Union Pacific and Wa- bash iljastrace tnis fact in the dealings to-day. Controlled, however, as these shares are by cliques, and easily Influenced as they may be by near events, itis a question that the outside in- ‘Vestor must determine for himself whether auy Breculative security offered on the listis at this moment worth hoiding ‘or a large rise, or whether those who have purchased at lower figures are not Waking @ market through which to sweep their arag-net and take in profits. The weakness is due to adecliue in tne Gemand from bankers and importers, THE UNITED STATES TREASURY. The revenue receipts to-day were $275,000; na- tional bank notes received for redemption, $639,000; customs recelpts for the week ending No- vember 14, $2,000,000 ; customs receipts for the day, $267,000, The Assistant Treasurer to-day paid out $156,000 on account of interest and $121,000 in redemption of dve-twenty bonds. THE GOLD MARKET. Gold opened at 11144, but subsequently receded to 111 a 110%. Nearing the close of the day the | price advanced, and the ending was at 111%. ‘There 15 no reason to change previously expressed convictions with reference to this department. The announcement was made to-day that $400,000 wold coin had been engaged for shipment by to- morrow’s steamers, The actual shipments to-day ere said to nave been $274,000, of which $250,000 ‘were in gold coin, and the remainder in silver bars. The feeling of the market is oullish, not. ‘withstanding a decline in the rates of sterling re- ported at anearly hour. Tue ra‘es paid for carry- ing were 1,2, 3,4and 13% per cent.
