THE EPISCOPAL CONVENTION. Pinal Adjournmont—President Craik’s Valedictory—The Bishop’ Pastoral Address—Rushing Business ¥ Every Other Body. Divers matters of minor importance came before , the Convention yesterday, and the calendar was +. Pushed throogh as rapidiy a8 possible, The reso- tation offered by Mr. Jennings afew days ago to prohibit certain ritualistic practices came up for Action, The Doctor advocated ita adoption. He went lately, he said, to a 80 called Protestant ehurch in this city and found the door blockaded with Catholic priests. He went to a second charch and read a notice over its door tnat Mrs. Jarley’s wax figures were on exhibition for the benefit of the church, He was opposed ‘to Mrs. Jarley on the one hand and the scarlet Woman on the other, Dr, De Koven called attention ¥o the canon on ritual already passed and sald that {8 bad four specifications—namely, kneellugs, bow- i@gs, prostrations and gennflections. The first, which was omitted as not symbolizing fatse doc- trines, was all that he or any other right thinking fitualist needed for adoration. The others were wither too irreverent or not reverent enough and Must have been aimed, ne tnought, at the low Murchmen. Dr. Adams, of Wisconsin, opposed she resolauion, because it put one man’s head in thancery—the chancery of the prize fig hters— that it might be mashed by another man, A measure was introduced looking toward UNIFORMITY OF REPRESENTATION | Df orders itu the standing committees, The dio- Ceses of Connecticut, Maryland and Easton have | crerermen exclusively on those committees, All — the other dioceses have one-half laymen and the Other hal! clergymen, Dr, Beardsley, Mr. Welsh, Governor Stevenson, Mr. Stark, Drs. Kidney, Hop- ing and Watson spoke on. this subject—ail except ir. Welsh in opposition, Iv was deemed an un- Warrantable and unconstitutional interierence ith the prerogatives of dioceses, and, not having geen. asked for by the laymen of the dioceses ro be aggrieved, it was on motion laid on le. sh . Resolutions were adopted on the organization of ne next General Convention; touching the pas- ral relations of chaplains in theological seml- paries: making the request of at least twelve shops necessary to the convening ol the House df Bisno,.8, under canon 13, title 1, tor the purpose Of consecrating & missionary bishop in the interim of the General Convention. ‘The bishops asked for the power to suspend a minister against whom charges 0! immorai conduct Bre preierred jcnding the trial of these charges, The House of Deputies would not grant this ve- tause it gave the bishops an arbitrary power. They could suspend a minister and under various pretexts put off the trial, and perhaps never ring it on, and keep the man im condemnation. But another reason was that a bishop who should Buspend a minister before charges had been proved against him would lay himself liable to prosecution for libel. COMPLIMENTARY RESOLUTIONS, Resolutions of thanks were given fo the officers 1 the Conven‘ion, to Dr, Ty ng. Jr., for his offer of 8 church for the closing services (which offer was leclined because the bishops preferred Calvary church); the rectors and vestry of Trimity parish; to Postmaster James and the Western Union Telegraph Company and others. While a com- mittee was out iniorming the bishops that the Convention was ready to adjourn Dr. Craik took advantage of aluilin the proceedings to deliver his valedictory. He thanked the House person- sily for its courtesy and aid toward Himself, and @iso that it had come up so nobly to its work. “There ig ai opinion avroaad,” he said “that ‘mis House hag not done anything for the fenversion of men. But those who thus sbject forget that men can’t be converted We canons and joint resolutions. You have eted,” said the Doctcr, ‘five missionery nshops, showing that you mean to get squarely at his work, too, and that it siali be done better than it has been done heretofore, And ven, ior ihe better execution of the divine work of the Rhoreh, youare imbued with tne importance of work, You have deciared that Ponvictettes is a sacred thing, and you Are determined that however good zeal may be yet without knowledge it is nota aspecial quali- fication tor the ministry of this Church. ‘his Church is as comprehensive as this land, and fntel- lect ts here the master. You have resolved that false doctrine, either directly or indirectiy, shall Mot be permitted in this Church, Now, then, go forth in the strength 0} God to do this work and to expel the enemies of God and of the Church tnd of mankind—the worid, tho flesh and the flevil—stronger and more earnest than you have Dver teen berore.” This address was ordered to be printed in the minutes. After some routine business had been transacted and the House had approved tue minutes it adjourned to meet in Calvary church at hall-past seven P. M., woere tue Closing services Were held, and THE BISHOPS PASTORAL ADDRESS asa read, of which the folowing ts a synopsis :— ‘Yhe address, which was read to a large congre- gation by the presiding Bishop Smith, of Kentucky, te Out With honoracie mention o1' the deceased poste Ot the Church, the programme of whose emories cling to the survivors.
