The examination of Elvert Jackson, colored, charged with complicity ig the murder of Samuel J. Jones, at South Oyster Bay, in June of last year was commenced yesterday before Justice Bennett, at the Town Hall in samatca. Jackson was arrested several days ago, but has, by direction of District Attorney Downing, been held in durance quietly until the arrest of a supposed accomplice and the attendance of certain important witnesses could be secured, the firat examination of the prisoner having b held io private. ‘The name of the ac- complice, and by tue authorities supposed to be the principal in the crime, is Lewis Jarvis, also ‘colored, and he is now in custody awaiting his examination apart from Jackson. Most of the witnesses in the cuse are colored persons. The history of the case is quite an interesting one, and # narration of all the circumstances leading to the arrest would form quite a novel chapter in detective mistory. The person mainly instrumentai ia Working up the matter is Devec- tive Stephen 1 *. a resident of Long Island, who, it will b ymoered, figured prominently to the arrest mination of Thomas 8, Jones, the hall-protuer o; tue deceased, upon whom sus- picion at one time strongly rested. Jarvis and Jackson—the former known as @ boss “gtubber” in tie netgnborhoud—were at work clearing a piece of land on a ‘arm adjoiaing Samuel J. Jones’ place on the forenoon of the day preceding the murder, They left of work at noov, and their movements after that time = fir: ied to a& Suspicion that they knew something about the crime, They were both exauined at the inquest held by Cor- oner Baylis, but succeeded m giving such an ac- count of themse.ves as for a time tended to duil suspicion against them. The failure to fix the crime upon the aail-brother, however, did not dis- courage Payne, who immediately sought a new Channel of tuvestization, and finally adopted this one as most It to lead to the desired result. Under the sauction and with the advice of the District Atuorney he‘has pursued tue investiga- tion with great ; ertinacity and keenness, and has ‘af last succeeded in getung what he pelieves to be a “good case.”” Outside the court room and apart trom each otaer, the suspected men have involved themselves in 4 perfect maze of contradictions, and have made statements in regard to their where- abouts at the (ime of the murder at direct vari- ance with their testimony at the Coroner's in- juest. § ‘At the examination yesterday !t was decided to exclude ali ine witnesses irom the room except- ing the one on tite staad, and, in fact, to keep out all “outsider: to prevent the possibility of collu- sion. District Attorney Downing Was unavoidavly absent, and in consequence only one or two wit- nesses were eXatnined, the furtuer hearing being adjourned at lis request. jibert Jackson was first called in his own be- half. He was asked tf he desired to make a state- ment under oatn, and he answered yes. He was. questioned by Detective Payne as to his move- ments at the time of the murder and afterward, a8 to the amount of money he had about that tim | and where le got it. He told @ rambiing and co: | fused story about having worked jor Mr. Bedell Raynor, of Freeport, avout # month before the | murder, and that Mr, Raynor then paid him some money. Mr. Raynor was called, however, and it appeared from his testimony that Jackson did not work for bim until last winter, in January or February, Jackson was then asked whether he could reconcile the testimony, and he sald he could not—“it would have to be lef just as it is.’ He contradicted himself ti many ways and astoapparently Vital points.
