‘WIVANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, A Flurry in the Stock Market— Gains and Losses. Rumors, Comments and Facts— Erie Again Heard From. GOLD FIRM—MONEY STEADY Monpaye oot Filey P, Pw} The course of the stock market to-day faily justi- fled the criticisms upon it and upon the general condition of the country recently made in this col- umn. The prices of several of the leading stocks about which so much has been said and printed | showed that they rested on a basis at once ieeble, artificial and uncertain. By a shrewd and not un- common process they had been jorced sharply Upward and there held until outside purchasers came in—as this class usually do, at or about the top of the market—and then the original epecu- lators began to unioad, The want of a sustaining power was quickly felt, and thus to-day, when a | More liberal selling movement took place, a de- Cline followed which in a few hours, Wa8 equal to | the advance of a whole week. The day was not without its excitement, there being many ramors of failure and predictions of disaster, but research was unattended by reward | in this direction, save in a single instance, and there is really no good reason why such events should be anticipated in the mear future. Much comment was indulged in concerning some large London house which, it was said, had succumbed to complications arising from the insurrection in the Argentine Republic and consequent decline in South American securities, but up to @ late hour no names were mentioned publicly. The only failare on the Stock Exchange was that of Mr. H. A. Patterson, who gracefully announced to Presi- dent Broadhead, in a brief letter, his “imabiiity to respond to differences growing out of puts and cals.’ Much sympatny was expressed for the unfortunate gentieman; but the fatlure itself was without effect, In re- sponse to an inquiry whether much short interest had been created to-day, the answer was in the | hegative from various sources, and the decline of prices was attributed to an anxiety on the part of holders to realize while prices were yet good. GAINS AND Loss Ansompates with closiig eas last night, the gains and losses have been as follow: Gatvs.—Erie, 1 per cent; Harlem, 34; Delaware, | #8 C., OC. andl, C., 1; 1 409 Lackawanna and Western, Losses.—New York Central, 3 Bannival und St. Joseph, 1; Lake Shore, 13; Nortiuwest, common, %; Ohio and Mississippi, Pacific Mail, 1; Rock Island, %&; St. Paul, 3,3 | Wabash, %; Union Pacific, 14, and Western Unton, 134. Demand bils were firmer than long sterling, and there was consider- able inguiry jor cable transfers, ali of which is | quite natural in view of the present ieverish feel ing. Commercial bills continue scarce, and were quoted at 4.33)6 a 4.8424.
