James, New kurk, POLILICS IN NEVADA. {From the San Francisco Bulletin.) ‘There are pretty lively times jast now in Nevada Over the forthcoming election.. The county con- ventions appear to be the great centres of attrac- Mon, because they are the nominating bodies for State Senators and Assemblymen, who will have ‘he choice of a United states Seuator. We find that gaveral county conventions have recom- mended the renomination oj Governor Bradley, but there are those cynical envugh to say this arises, Dot om jove to Bradley, but to keep him out of the way for some more savored candidate for the Senatorship. Nuwierous are the citiwens of Nevada wuo want to be Governor, On the side of the democracy, in aduition to Gov- ernor Bradley, we na Colonel Ellis, of Ormsby county; J, ©. Currie, of Storey; Sen- ator, McOoy, of Kureka, apd senator Macbeth, of Humboidt, are candivates ior the position, Un the republican side tne following are named as as- rants ior the Gubernatorial otlice :—J. U. Haziett, james W. Haines and J. U. Stephenson. The po- aition of Congressman seems to be rather in the background, aud so lar only tue name of Robert E. Lowery, iormerly Speaker of the Nevada As- sembly, has been named on the part ol the dem- ocracy, should ©. W. Kendall desire to retire. Ags to the republican Candidate, nv name bas yet been prominently mentioned. ne contest in the re- eBblcsy Tanks lor the senate is drawing closer etween Sharon and De Loug, and it is snrewdly eee that De Long has no great anxiety to be in Sharon's way. Among tie democracy Gen- eral Williams is evidently tne favorite, though many of the friends oi Congressman Kendall think that his services enttiie nim to the support of his arty. The Independents of Nevada have a State jonvention on the 24vh of this month, and posal bly the proceedings of that body may slightly alter she compiexion oi affairs, THE WAY IN WYOMING, (Fort Laramie Letter to spe Cincinnati Commer- c The shooters were a queer lot. Some arrant cowards, others not, Some brave under peculiar circumstances, such as a street fight or a promis Cuous shoowing, and sneaking When “the tother fellow had tne drop,” or when tackled by any- thing out of their particular line, Tasked Dave Reed:—‘How did you happen to kill ‘Heenan #7 “Why, { fired a little Derringer I had from my pants pocket.” “Bul what was the cause ot it?” ‘Weil, you see, he thought te was chief, and I Know’d he wasn’t; and oue day I was drinking at the Star Sample Rooms and he came up to me, and I seed business in nis eye. 1 ivoled nim. There were many in which the Coroner was calied, if convenient, and the verdict rendered, “Killed by party or parties unknown.” As for highway rob- bery, it was as little thought of as taking a drink, No one thought of going out at night with any Amount of money on tne person. toward mid- Might none but tie most venturesome went into streets ulone, and then armed and carefully avoid- {ng the sidewalks. WRESTLING WITH A BEAR. ‘Witt’s Adventure with a Bear, in Bear Canyon—Bruin Gives Him an Affection- ate Hug. {From the Denver (Col.) News.] On last Friday J. H. Witt, of Bear canyon, went into the mountains to look for some cattle that bad strayed away, and aiter proceeding about three miles, and While pausing to listen and look s@bout, suddenly a large cinnamon bear, which had been concealed in the bushes near by, sprung toward him with the evident intention of giving him a hug. Not fancying sucu intimate friendship with strangers, Mr. Witt declined to permit the affectionate embrace, and made for a tree which fortunately stood close by, and reached the lower branches, near the gronud, just ag bruin seized hold of his right leg and ankle. Alter ascvere struggle he succeeded in freeing Bimselt trom the bear’s hold, but betore he could met out of reach the other seg was grasped with such a firm hold that he could not shake him off, and he began to fear that bis time had come and that he wus destined to become a meal for the Tavenous beast. But finally the bear iet go, slid down the tree and retreated Irom the fleld. Ag goon as he decmed it prudeut Mr. Witt slid down and then walked three miles to Round’s mill, where lis wounds were dressed by Dr. Vick, who gays be will not be able to waik for some days. These facts our reporter learned irom A. K. Thomp- ‘on, A MURDEROUS PLOT FRUSTRATED. The Cdlumbus (Ga.) Enquirer of the 21st says that Josepn F, Dickerson, baggage master on the Western Railroad of Alabama, was arrested to- day tor trying to bribe George Harper, colored, to assassinate J. M. Webster, conductor on the rail- ruad, Dickerson and Harper were to divide tne money taken between them.
