FINANCL AND ONMERCLL The Situation in Wall Street and Its Eurroundings. No Changes in the Monetary Situation—Cold Firm at 110 a i10 8-8, WALL Srreer, SaTerpay, Oct, 3—6 P. The business of to-day, while not so large in vol- ‘ume as that 0! some other daysin the week, showed no change in the almost acrimonious character of the struggle between the adyauce elements of the Street, Lake Shore continues to be the central point of attraction, and, with Western Union, up- holds the market, Such short interest as existed in the early part of tast month has been closed out, and whatever new ventures are made in this direction are so temporary and feeble that they only result tu augmenting ex- isting strength. There are not wanting those, however, who, while ‘long’ of stock, take advantage ot each rise of half per cent to tnerease their investments, still watch with wary eyes for the first symptoms of a decline, and will be first to turn their backs upon the market, in order to escape what they claim may be a long, dull winter season. This might have been ex- pected. They are of a class who do not take much stock in THE GIL GED REPORTS of great crops, large railroad earnings, improve- | ment in manutactures and the prosperity of mer- chants, and to Whom the results of the panic are still a bugbear if nota reality. Their own capital 4g idle and so they rush into Wall street specula_ tions, helping meanwhile to swell the bubbles, and asking themselves the question how much of the wealth o{ other thousands is likewise unemployed. In the answer they dnd neither confidence nor en- couragement. They see a market that bas been moved ufwards artificially, and is only sympa- thetically strong; one which rests on even a weaker basis than that of last spring, when “‘in- Mlation” was the cry of the street and everybody was predicting a period of un- eXampied prosperity, AS above indicated, however, nota little outside money is swooping around the maeistrom of the great gamble, and in the lucky turns of the last fortnight hundreds have biessed good fortune for existing opportuni- ties, The choice of investment, it may be said, nas been confinea principally to the dividend paying stocks, and others which are outside of the Granger influence, and in this respect it Is grauty- ing to observe that the comments and suggestiol of this colamn have been verified by present re- sults. “Itisa long lane, however, which bas no turn." THE RANGE OF PRICES of leading stocks during the day was as follows:— New York Central and Hudson opened at 101) sold up to 102%, closing at that price—a gain of 1 per cent since lasc night.
