In FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Moderately Active Stock Market, with Prices Fairly Maintained. GOLD109 7-8 A110. Foreign Exchange Easier—Money a Shade More Active, Governments Firm, Railway Mortgages Strong. WALL STREET, THURSDAY, Sept. 3—6 P. M. ‘This was a day of realization on the Stock Ex- change—the usual complement of a purchasing ‘day such as yesterday, The stock market opened 34 to % per cent below the closing figures of last night, with Western Union and Pacific Mail as ex- ceptions, which were } to 4 per cent higher re- Spectively. A general decline of 34 to 34 per cent followed, which was subsequently recovered at | the first board, Later ©., C. and J. C. went off 108 | and Wabash to 234, which influenced a decline in ‘the general list of 4 to % per cent. G., G. and J. C. recovered to $3 and Wabash to 84, the balance of the list improving % to 34 per cent, | With a steady market. The largest transactions of the day were in WESTERN UNION, ‘which advanced upon an anticipated report of the ‘company showing a largely increased business, with increased earnings. -Tbis (the rorthcoming) exhibit has been whispered about the street jor ‘weeks past; hence we reirain from comment upon it now as a subject already too old tor treatment here. The speculators in the stock of Western Union—we do not know if there are any investors— ‘will, Of course, judge for themselves how far this davorable report has been already discounted. Even if it had come out yesterday simultaneously with the deciaration of the dividend it might have obtained larger respect; but now—why, the stock to-day went off from 78% to 77%,upon sales of 27,000 shares, Union Pacific only showing more ac- tivity in the list, with sales reaching to 27,100 shares. A rumor prevailed at one time that ROCK ISLAND ‘would only declare a 3 per cent dividend; but this eport, gotten up in the same spirit which dis- counted @ $ per cent dividend in Lake Shore and ‘was much chagrined at the declaration of none, ‘which was the only thing worse than a 4 percent dividend, was promptiy denied by parties con- mected with tue company. It has been noted that, after Western Union, Union Pacifico was the most active stock. The continued rapid conversion of income into sinking fund bonds and the adver- tisement thereby obtained combine to advance ‘Whis stock. The exchanges yesterday were quite large, and if continued in the same ratio will soon complete the work of conversion, Aiter the stocks already specially reierred to the most ac- ‘tive were Lake Shore, Obios and Erte. Activity ‘was fairly maintained up tothe close of business, THE USUAL PARTIAL REACTION occurring in the last hour. Wabash was most ‘conspicuous for weakness and declined to 32, Hannibal and St. Joseph went off from 24% to 2354 and Atlantic and Pacitic preferred from 14 to 10%, The decline in the balance of the list ranged from % to % percent. The hardening of the premium is evi- dently due. to a closing out of a portion of the | short interest, which paid a consideration for the vase Of gold yesterday. Loans to-day were made flat and % tol percent for carrying. There were 29 bids tor the government gold at the Sub-Treas- ury to-day, aggregating $4,870,000, Tanging from 109.51 to 109.84. The awara of $1,000,000 was made from 109.77 upward. The cus- toms receipts to-day were $551,000. The Assistant *| ‘Treasurer paid out $111,000 on interest account ana $13,000 in redemption of five-twenty bonds. The Treasury at Washington received $400,000 five- | twenties for redemption. The steamship Cimbria for Europe to-day took out $260,200 specie, of which $100,000 was gold coin and the remainder silver coin. THE MONEY MARKET showed a slightly increased «activity, call loans be- ing 2 and 3 per cent. Prime short date mer- cantile paper 18 5 to 6 per cent and long date 634 to 2% percent. The period for active money usually attendant upon the fall movementof the crops ‘would appear to have reached its initial stage. The report yesterday of the embarrassment of the Citizens’ Bank of New Orleans was confirmed this | ‘morning by news of its suspension, For some time the credit of the bank has been impaired and its bills have not been readily taken away from home, nenc2 the loss will fall chiefly upon the locality of the bank, Its assets are said to be large, but composed to a great extent of real estate, which in New Orleans at the present time ts most unavailable. The internal revenue re- ceipts to-day were $327,000, ‘ FOREIGN EXOHANGE opened dall, with a tendency to lower figures.
