WALL STREET, Moxbay, August 2—o P.M. t The week opened with generally a firm tone in the several markets here to-day, stocks being strong in the earij dealings and until after the second call, when there was a reaction, and the market went of % to % per cent, closing heavy. ‘The early streizth tu the market was in conse- quence of a rumor to the effect that the Supreme Court of Wisconsin would render a decision to- morrow in the (auious railroad cases less adverse ‘to the railroads tham had been anticipated, ana ‘the reaction resulted from a second report that no decision whatever would be rendered to-morrow, nor until the ciose of the term. This is @ fair sample of the reliability to be placed upon any Wall street reports as to the quality of this decision, which reports must neces- sarily, from the very circumstances of the case, be wholly speculative. The sales of the day aggregated 145,.0) shares, the principal dealings ‘deing in Western’Union, Lake Shore, Pacific Mail, Union Pacific aud Rock Island, the operations in the former covering 79,700 shares, ana in the Others named 41,300 snares, making together Dearly five-sixths of the entire dealings. Re- pecting Pacific Mail, the continued presence of the City of Peking in these waters, when she was ‘built for the Pacific trace, excited some comment. It was generally admitted that this cruising @round was a good advertisement for the com- pany, and might possibly help stock speculation, but it was also conceded that the: stock would be ‘benefited more substantially if the business of the company required her immediate presence in the Pacific waters to earn freights.
