PRIZE FIGHT IN PHILADELPHIA. Dooney Harris, of New York, Whipped by Patsy Marley, of the City of Brotherly LoveeThe Stakes $500. PHILADELPHIA, Pa, Augnst 17, 1874. ‘This Morning at four o'clock a prize Aght took place on Haines street, above Limekiin pike, be- tween Patsy Mariey, of Phitadeiphia, and Dooney Marris, of New York, for a purse of $500, The ring was pitched before daylight, and Alderman | Remwlen, of this city, was chosen referee, The | Might commenced at ten minutes to tour o'clock fm the presence of avout three oundred and tity etators. Marley got credit for first blood and % nockdown, On the tiurd rownd Marley bit ‘ @ terrific blow on the left temple, telling Harris came to time, but it was evident he | “was very Weak, and Mariey used lite efort to | ‘wnoek him down. He wasimet suortly after nis arrival in New York by @ representative of the HERALD, He said he never felt better in and referred to his face to show how little he had been punished in bis last week’s match. He, however, expressed himself in no measured terms in regard to Collyer’s attempt to place him in a false light before the public oy his statement, or purported statement, as published in a Western paper. Edwards states emphatically that the cry of foul which was raised by Collyer’s second, Barney Aaron, as he came to the scratch on the twellth round, was nothing more thana mere subteriuge in order to bring the fight to an end by reason of Collyer being unable to fight any more. Collyer, Eawards ciaims, was so exhausted, and in such a Weak condition,-as to be unable to come to time— im fact, was so badiy cut up as to be unwuling, | and, besides, unable to face him any longer. When the cry Of foul was made, on the ground that Edwards had something in is hands, or that he bad smotuered bis hand with some liquid contrary wo the rules, the referee, as Edwards states the case, ordered him to open his hands, which be did. All that was found were two or three biades of grass which had become attached thereto when he nad been thrown or Jell on the ground. He admits, how- ever, having rubbed the tnside of his hand with Venice turpentine on the third round. This, he says, Was done only to give him greater power | to keep nis fists clenched and with no desire to in- | jure his antagonist. In fact not enough was used course frequently adopted by prize fighters and bas never been objected to, “In any event,” said Eawards, “the releree having ordered me to wasn | my hands, which was with the fight, shows that claim or to withdraw their man, The fact 18, Coll- yer Was 80 badly whipped as to preciude him trom coming up When time was called. to bis triends, ‘Claim a foul, claim a foul; I won’t fight;’ thus plainly showing that he did not want tne fight to be determined on its merits but to be able to creep out of toma quibble.
