A Torchlight Procession and Pub- lic Greeting at Cork. Address by the Nationalists and His Reply. THE BRIMISH GOVERNMENT UNCONCERNED. Conk, Ireland, July 26, 1874, Yesterday Jobn Mitchel, the veteran “Irish rebel,” arrived in Cork Harbor from New York, by the Guion steamship Idano. Nobody expectea he would have landed at Queenstown; but he was fatigued after the voyage, and did, There was much speculation asto whether the British gov- ernment would molest him—nis coming being a direct challenge—but not a solitary policeman was there to interfere with his landing. He came straight to Cork city, where the news of his ar- rival spread like wildfire and set the whole town aflame wita excitement. He was waited on by crowds of his old associates of 48 and young dis ciples of '67, At night the streets were alive ‘wish bands of music and bonfires, and there was a vast torchlight procession to bis residence, im which 5,000 people took part. His arrival is hailed as one other stormy petre} in Irish politics, His mind 18 quite made up to seek the representation of some large constituency and carry the war into St. Stephens. The nationalists presented him with the following address :. THE NATIONALISTS’ ADDRESS. Long tried and well trusyed iriend of our native land, we, filled with emotional happt- ness, give you a cordial welcome on returning alter your iong exile to the shores of the land for which you have 80 nobly suffered. The fickle and tyrannical policy of England, foul misnomer of justice, by which our expressions must be bou forbids us to mete outour true opiniou of your sacri ; but no bond or tle can prevent us from twhankin; Heaven and feeling proud that though pure and unsullied you entered on your novitiate of suffering, yet grander and prouder you emerged from its cloud—the purity lower by the lengthy ordeal, the unsul- lied character ennobled by the solidity of uncomplaining manhood. And now, he ieoe folowing, you throw over it a halo of a a4 the stern, manly attitude you hold any 6 ie unnecessary to say how your unselfish bfe wi watched and loved. Your departare trom and your return to Iretand form worthy brackets tor the life of love, Leaving it manacied for attempting its salvation, and now, whem in he West you attained a& 1 position that commanded for you the respect of tbe world, revered with affection that emperors might envy, you resign all and return to devote the renlainder of yoar existence to the service of your own beloved island. ‘This ever to be remem- bered pleasure was not so soon expected, and our pent up jecings cannot find time to take vent, being weighed down by the happiness consequent our presence. e can ony again and again bid you welcome, assuring you tl! merited esteem and the deep, un- dying love of your countrymen’can in aught palli- ate tbe sufferings occasioned by your long absence, part of the penalty is wiped out. Under the ex- ceptional circumstances of Ir, coming and the uncertainty of the stand to be taken we deem it neither wise nor pradent to speak as we would; but, trusting long and many opportunities of so aoing will yet be ours, we, thou ern nobie lion of Trelaad, thus again bid you a caed mille yatlie, JOHN MITCHEL'S REPLY. Mr, Mitchel rephed as follows:— SIR AND GENTLEMEN OF CoRK—I can scarcely reak ize to myself and to my own senses the fact that I am standing this day upon my own feet in the city of Cork alter twenty-seven years of absence. The exeitement that | have labored under from the moment I arrived in sight o: Cape Clear has tnca- appreciating ana have given me to-night. You have welcomed me in the most noble and gerd manner to the land of my nativity, This 1s the land I was born in. (Appiause.) I have a right to stand upon the soil of Ireland, My tather was born here and all tf people, and I think I have a right to be in Irelat As to the pretended sentence—the conviction which made a felon of me—perhaps you are aware that I have never acknowledged it. I was not tried—I was not convicted. (Ap- plause.) I was sentenced basely, fraudulent and foully, and although my sentence is not worked out I choose to come back here. Of co Thave an errand, I have some business here—I suppose I have. (A laugh,) Some of my country- men have given me to understand that I might do good here; that I might do something effective in fie struggle of our country against foreign aomin- ation; and Lam willing. When | was asked—as I told the company outside the gate just now—when I was asked by ocean telegram, “Will you come here if elected for Cork??? What could I say? I could have onty one answer, “If I am elected for Cork I go there instantly.” (Loud applause.) Idon’t care one straw what the British govern- ment may think of ft. Of course they can arrest me. They can arrest you, sir; ot sir—any of without rhyme or reason, without any charge dgalnat you. They may keep you in dungeons as they please; they can do no inore tome. We are ail subject to that kind of dominatton, There is no law in your (eit a pried whatever. The only law there was gt oreee peo- ple’s liberties is suspended—tt suspended all the time with you—habeas corpus suspensions. So, of course, I may be arrested, as any of you gentiemen may be arrested and shut up and put under ground somewhere and never see the d. light any more, 1 know that, but I won’t stand t. I choose to come and try whether we cannot make @ country Of our own on our own soil. (Cheers.) It is Very easy to taunt me with vanity and pre- sumption for such pretensions as | make, [I know itis vanity and presumption. (No, no!) I know it 1s an audacious pretension, but what can. Ldo—one individual? I do not come here with fire and sword. I have not an Irish-American army at my back. (Laugiter.) 1 come here my- self, Therefore I know I am liable, as ever: mother’s son of you 1s lisple, to be arrested an tmprisoned, There ia not one of you who ts ex- empt from that liability. Ihave come to take share of 1. I know that I will have my share. know our enemies don’t jike me. They hate me, and they have good reason to hate me. (Laughter and applause). A Voice—I hope they will have more reason to | pate you on that account. Mr. Mircurt—lam not going toexplamn at this present moment ail that J may mean to do in the lature, or that I may tuink it right todo, This is You all know me pertectiy well. I hope you know me. I will not betray my own past, hor the honor, the glory, the nity and the right of my country. (Appiause.) f will net betray them. Therefore I need not be more ex- fore in talking to you. (Hear, hear.”) I now who you must be—the young men of Cork— of Cork city. I¢is a kind of city that | would hke to assoctate myself with. I would like to represent Cork. You could not resurn me the other day. Several Voices—You were not here or we ‘would. Mr. MiTcHEL—I was not here, and probably if i Was you would have returned me, Sut ever since I came to man’s estate I have nad a great love and regard ior Cork city. You now give me an .addi- tional reason to have a Jove and regard for Cork. (Loud applause.) The deputation then withdrew. Mr. Mitchel will leave to-morrow morning for Dublin. “NOBODY TO.
