10 ~YAOHTING IN THE SOUND, brought three great loads of human 5 each, and several other large steamers added greatly to the assembled crowd, which was estimated at nearly 10,000 peo- ple. The programme of to-day comprised Annual Cruise of the New |: |. @ skiff race, a protessional single scull race and a York Yacht Club. A DROWSY CALM ON THE DEEP. Tiresome Drift from Glen Cove to New London. New Lonpon, August 6, 1874. However cheerful the prospects tor the annual eruise of the New York Yacht Club—an event, by tae way, to which unusual interest is attached ‘this year—it must be confessed that the maugural ‘trip severely tested the strength of that element, patience, which yachtsmen are supposed to pos- sess in abundance. In a word, the run from Glen Cove to this port was a most perplexing Ortft, dur- ing which baffitng winds and dead calms alternated at almost regular intervals for the space of four and twenty hours. The vessels belonging to the club have probably never occupied so much time pm any previous cruise in covering the ground from the rendezvous to New London, a distance of @ome seventy-eight miles. But as good luck 1s not always the fortune of yachtsmen bent on a tour of Pleasure, bope must supply its place. THE RENDEZVOUS. It was late on Tuesaday afternoon before the @quadron was weil represented at Gien Cove. The @cene was rendered additionally enlivening by the arrival of the trim and tiny craft of the Atlantic Yacht Club, whose annual cruise also commenced morning. It is neediess to add that the advent of the vessels of both organizations caused quite a futter in the vicinity. A ball was given at the Pavilion, which was largely attended; and al- together Glen Cove revelled in gayety and excite- ment until long past midnight. Owing to the mumber of events on the programme it was deemed advisable to make an early start; but there being no possibility of getting out of the harbor at the time agreed upon, consequent upon the aead eaim that prevailed, ‘THE START swas postponed until yesterday morning. Among the veasels lying at anchor were the following gchooners:—alarm, 225 tons, A. . Kingsland; Dauntiess, 268 tons, J. G. Bennett; Gypsie, 51 tons, M T. Livingston; Idler, 141 tons, 8. J. Colgate; ‘Magic, 90 tons, W. I. Garner; Rambler, 233 tons, W. H. Thomas; Restless, 95 tons, G. G. Haven; Wanderer, 208 tons, H. Stillman. The sloops in- eluded the Gracie, J, B. Waller; Vindex, 54 tons, Robert Center; Vision, 58 tons, J. J. Alexandre; Wayward, 32 tons, W. E. Morris. There were also present from the Atiantic Yacht Club, the Peer. | Jess, Eddie, Agnes, Mystic, Undine. The first gun wae fired at 5h. 16m. A. At this time it was bout the first of the ebb tide, with aslight breeze from the northward. The first vessel to trip nchor was the fine iron sioop Vindex, and Jollow- img in her wake were the Gracie, Vision, Magic, Wanderer, Dauntless, Restiess, Rambler, Idler, ‘Wayward apd others. The Vision made a short board in shore and got to windward of the other | sloops. IN THE SOUND. The Gracie rounded Matinicock Point shortly after seven o'clock, leading the fleet. Next to = were the Wayward and Vision. Then came , Vindex, idier and Wanderer; the os tiess, Rambier and Dauntiess bringing up the rear. The varying character of the wind continued to make matters somewhat monoto- nous. Ataquarter past seven o'clock the lead- vessels, which, afew minutes before enjoyed | a fine breeze, were suddenly becalmed. Half an hour ome however, the Magic got the wind from te northward. ‘the Gracie and Wayward | were next in Tuck and led off for a mile before the Vision caugnt it. Later on the large schooners were javored with a Night breeze and made the best of it; but it was evident that few of the vessels would have any le for FR: proper display of their respect- ave qualte Meanwhile the vessels of the Atlau- tc Yacht x elud, which left Gien Cove at seven @clock, were gradually coming up, prominent » Smong the foremost being tne Agnes and Orion, ? At about a quarter to ten A. the large schooners began to ieel the breeze, and ior > ie Ume there were some senepents an enlivening change; but had. the vessels commenced to move Tapidly through the water when they were again becalmed. Thus passed nearly the entire day, the vessels at one time stationary, at amotper rifting along, a iew getting an extra pul! and others not a breath of wind. At 5b. 40m. the came out ahead. Most of the sloops Jew Of the schooners took in their topsaiis, equall which struck them threatened to make thi galling lively; bat it was of er. brief duration, and when it bad died away the dead caim came in Vogue again. When darkness set in all interestin the competition ceased. Most of the yachts had to beat about all night before getting into the nar- bor. The order of their arrival was as follows:— ‘Vision, 11h. 60m.; Gracie, 11h. 58m. Next came the Magic, about ten minutes after midnight, then the Rambler, Vindex, Wanderer, Dauntless, Rest: dens, Idier and Alarm. It was deter- mined to have a race to-day from this port to Corufieid ligntship. This morning, however, the idea was abandoned, as most of the crews were worn out after yesterday's fatiguing sail. THE PROGRAMME. At a meeting of captains held on board the flag- | ship this morning it was agreed to start for New- port to-morrow morning. The UCorinthian race, | which is looked forward to with so much expecta- tion of pleasure, is set down for Saturday. Several members of the ciub will participate in a pigeon Match on Monday next, and on the day following the race postponed from to-day will be sailed over the usual course irom Newport. Other events are under discussion, and altogether the cruise prom- anes to be gratilying and successful, An Interesting Regatta at Rochester Yesterday. Rocuester, N.
