FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Lake Shore the Feature of the Stock Market. Is the Commodore Going to Lease ItP GOLD 1101-8 A HO 1-4, roraalenenent tierce A Generally Quiet Day, with Few Changes of Moment. WALL STREET, TUESDAY, July 21—6 P. M. } ‘The usual midsummer duiness appears to have nally settled upon the markets here, especially so far as these are represented on the Stock Ex- change, to-day, although exhibiting a slight im- Provement in the aggregate of dealings, being marked by the same indifference, the same stag- | mation, as distinguished vesterday. This is readily accounted for by the absence of so many of the \prominent operators who, having closed out their ‘Interest in stocks, have gone off summering, quite indi‘ferent as to whether school keeps or not on Broad street, satisfied that when they come back they can pick up again the broken thread of their studies and resume their old placesin the class without much effort. This is virtually vaca- tion time in Wall street, and those who are leit benind in the marbie building bring about ®8 much interest to the operations in the market as the boy who 1s “kept tn” at school does in his penal hour to the uncon- sidered lesson of the morning. It needs the rivalry of the whole class to bring out the full powers of | | each member of it, and this is precisely what is — lacking on the Stock Exchange at this time. The stock market opened quiet and dul, prices in the early dealings declining +; a % per cent, which ‘was followed by an advance of ‘ @ % per cent be- fore the second call. At the second call there was @ olight reaction, and prices went off in some in- stances from the highest points, During the last hoar of business the market was qulet, fluctuating ‘witnin @ very narrow margin, and closed steady. The principal and in fact the only feature of the list was Lake Shore, the aggregate dealings in which were 40,500 shares, comprising more than one- half the entire list. The fluctuations in this stock ‘were also the widest, the stock going off from 12% to 12% and rallying again to 7344. The fuctuations in the balance of the list were only 4 a% per cent, THE EXCITEMENT IN LAKE SHORE ‘was occasioned by the repetition of the story of a dividend, supplemented with a statement that the Commodore proposed to lease Lake Shore. This, ‘in connection with the report of a meeting of the | directors to-morrow, subsequently explained as a | meeting of the Execative Committee to be held at | so the Commodore’s office, in Fourth street, gave an 1 iD impetus to transactions in this stock that absorbed almost the entire attention of the market, Re- specting the lease nothing definite could be ascer- tained, as nothing definite can be ascertained for Publication in like matters while they are still in Process of incubation. The incentive to the lease is said to be that the Commodore thinks he can better afford to lease that road 200 upon a guaranteed dividend of even eight | } per cent tnan carry One-half its capital stock trom time to time, as he is obliged to do in order to maintain control over. itso as to sustain his close connection. A lease would give him a through line between New York and Chicago and | fnsure the constant employment of the great ele- vatoras he is now building in this city. Should the Commodore carry out the in. tentions he is credited with there will be a Itvely scramble on the Stock Exchange. table shows THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES daring the day, with the amount of sales in each #tock, the aggregate being 80,000 shares :— No. of Highest. WANTED, TO INVEST $5,000 The Benefit of a Morning Cocktail—A Hotel Proprieter Charged with Selling a Large Amount of the Forged Buffale and Erie Bonds. Charles B. Orvis, until recently proprietor ofa hotel on Broauway, was arrested yesterday morn- ing by Detectives Golden and Walling, upon com- platnt of George B. Ripley, charged with hypotne- cating forged bonds of the Buffalo and Erie Rail- way for the amount of $25,000, Orvis was intro- duced tothe firnr of Ripiey & Co. by a curbstone broker named Hays as a gentleman who wanted to raise money on some railroad securities.. An appointment was made, at which the bonds were to be preduced and examined, and the parties separated. Mr. Orvis kept his ap pointment, and succeeded in effecting an arrange- ment by which he received a check for the sum of $20,000, In return for this valuable paper he de- posited with Ripley & Co. forged bonds on the Buffalo and Erie Railway amounting to $25,000. In August, the following month, Ripley & Co. dis- covered the bonds were irregular, and Captain Irving, of the Detective Police, was informed of the. transaction. He detailed Detectives Golden and Walling to look after the case, and they com- menced @ search for Orvis, Whose description was. given them by Mr. Ripley. For a long time no trace of his whereabouts could be ascertatued, but THE DILIGENCE OF THE OFFICERS was finally rewarded with news of him. eer, fol- lowed his wandering footsteps Hp place to place, until he at last returned to tue cit ‘To be quite sure Of their man they requested je assistance of Mr. Townsend, a member of the swindied firm. Within the past ten days that they bave been hunting Orvis im the city they frequently ran across Lim, but never in such & way or place as would warrant his arrest, He appeared 80 busy, too, that they were willing to ive him @ little rope in the hope of catch- ie him in another affair. Hays, also, was. quite active, the officers say, for they were watch- ing him likewise. ‘Tne day before yesterday, while strolling along West street, they saw Hays go into a drug store, which is noted asa rendezvous for forgers and bond smashers from all parts of the Hays boldly entered the drag store, and, although the officers remained waiting jor him on | the other side oi the street for a couple of hours, he did not again appear. Supposing he must have left the place by aside door or passed along the thoroughfare under cover of @ passing vehicle, the detectives left. They then set them- selves determinedly work to hunt the hotels for Orvis, At one of the | leading houses they obtained information that disposed them to believe he was at the West Side Hotel, in Sixth avenue. On going to that house they learned through indirect jogutry he was certainly there. They remained op the watch ail night, and at an early hour Ef variae 8 morning en- tered the place and commenced a free and easy chat with the clerk, Having only just arrived ta town FROM THE COUNTRY they said a little morning beverage might not be out of the way. The obliging clerk was of the same opinion, and the three adjourned to the barroom. After sufficient bevera; had been imbibed to give them a good ops ern hon the estimation of the clerk, Detective Gol Suggested there was a iriend of his from the same Place staying in the hovel he very much wished to see, Business immediately swept over th cautious instincts of the clerk, and he hinted if the gentlemen would give him bheir cards he would | send them up stairs as soon as Mr. Orvis was awake. Walling desired another cocktail, and the clerk became overpowered with the affability and politeness of the detectives. Goiden was saddenl: struck with the obrilliancy of the joke it would be to take # cocktail up to his friend Orvis, and painted the scene of bis friend’s delighted surprise in such charming colors that the clerk was gen ote carried away and cers up to Orvis’ room. They proceeded to the door, keeping up the farce of the cocktail while the clerk Was in sight, and knocked. Mr. Orvis arose, invited them in and asked the nature of their business. [t was soon explained, aud he coolly dressed and went with them to the Central Office. He acknowledged | Selling the bonds to the Messrs. Ripiey, and said | he got them from a man named Williamson. This Williamson, the detectives say, isa man Damed Peveril, alias Morton, alias Brady, who bas served a termin the State Prison for a Gi fad fo, | committed on the store of McKay & Oo, | Vesey street. He has negotiated, they think, at Teast $250,000 worth of these same bonds, and they are now looking for him most anxiously. Orvis | Was conveyed to the Tombs Police Court yestérday afternoon, and remanded back to Headquarters until to-day. THE CHILD FIEND IN NEW YORK. Despite the terrible lessons which are contained in the reports of the Chartie Ross abduction case in Philadelphia and in that of the boy fend in Boston, the east side districts of New York, par- ricularly the upper portions of the Nineteentn ward, from Sixty-sixth street, are plagued by adult fiends who endeavor to inveigie and entice away little boys and girls from their homes. Only yesterday a man, apparently thirty-five years of age, disguised in a greenish colored soft hat and With green-glass goggles over his eyes, was seen to tap two or three children, ranging in age from six to ten years, on the shoulder and address them. One of them, a little girl, on being ques- | Uoned as to what he said, replied that he wanted her to go from tne Third to the Fourth avenue toa | candy store. Whattor? Whoishe! Where does | he live? Perhaps in some tenement with respect- able people who are not aware oi his character or | occupation.
