On Saturday information was received by the detective force that Mrs, Charles C. Herring, wiie of & carpet dealer, eorner of Second and South streets, received an in'ernal machine, | containing three pounds of powder, <A note accompanied the box, stating that it | contained some newly patented articles. The circumstances being deemed suspicious, the box was carefully opened, without accident, the enure family standing around it at the time. The box, which was one foot long and eight inches Wide, was filed with powder, on top of which, run with the heads arranged to almost touch a siding | lid, which was covered with sand paper. « If | the box had not been cautiously opened an ex- plosion would have occurred, injuring and proba- bly causing the death of tne entire family. Edward Wagner, a son-in-law, was arresved to- day on suspicion. Mr. Herring is the tather-in- law of Shusterichter, who murdered his wile last fall and then committed suicide. MUSDEER IN MARYLAND. | Woman Brutally Killed by Negroes | and Her Husband Badly Wounded. | Bauremons, July 20, 1874, | On Saturday night, in Talbot county, Md., a Mr. | Witman and wife, shortiy after leaving a store, Were attacked in the woods by two negroes, named | killed by a blow from a club and ber husband dan- | secre wounded and knocked senseless on the | ground. Witman, on recovering, gave the alarm, and the people in the neighboriood turned out, and had attempted suicide by partially cutting bis | throat. Wheeier was saved from being lynched only by | the determination of the oMcers. He confessed his crime, but bis accomplice 1s still at large.
