be) THE BROOKLYN QUERY. Mr. Tilton’s View of the Case Presented. ‘An Idea of the Promised Revelations. mRS. TILTON’S POSITION. A Semi-OfMictal Statement from Tilton. (From the Brooklyn Argus.) Mr. Tilton Nas been severely censured by many persons for baving kept silence until now. He could 10+ have done otherwise. It is known to Bis (riendS that the melancholy conditions which prevailed in bis nousehold came to his knowl- edge more than four years ago; that he | was compelled by @ sense of duty to pre- | vent any knowledge of those conditions from | reaching the ear of tne public; that, governed | by tus natural desire to shield his family from the | inevitable consequences of a scandal, he continued | wo keep silence until alter the publication of Dr. | Bacon’s remarks concerning himself; that when | be replied to Dr, Bacon in the letter which em- braced the passage from mr. Beecher’s apology we still refrained from mentioning names, and | twat 60 long as Mrs, Tilion remained in 8 house, continuing te hold her posi- tion as its mistress and his wife, he still pr served silence in regard to vital poimts in the case—patiently enduring the revilements | to which he was subjected, and saying to the | fiends to whose remonstrances he listened, “I can- | got and will not speak 60 loug as family reasons compe! my silence.” But a day came when Mrs. Tilton left her home. That day was Saturday of last week. The wile baving leit her husband, her chil- @ren and her house to accept the hos- tality of Mr. Beecher’s friends, apd hav- | ing by that act virtually deserted Mr. Tilton, | he feit he was justified tn withdrawing trom Ler | the protection she had previously received, and he was aiso painfully conscious that a fatal'step had been taken in thts sudden and legal severance @f the marital relations by the act of Mrs. Tilton, pabhiciy announced ina card in the columns of the Argus, written in her behall by Mr. Edward J. Ovington. Kelieved by (hat act /rom the obliga- tion he had beiore considered imperative, Mr. Tilton replied to the summons of the investigating | we pelieve to be above reproach, to allow the | Mantie of charity to jail quietiy over tue actors in | this scene, and, giving each the benefit of a aoubt, | end this most melancaoly controversy, the details | of wich, as published, none can peruse without a | Vaultress feeling akin to pain J have never seen Mr. Beecher but three times, and know nothing of the real merits of the case. | Louanue's entry I can only deplore that one who hus been a shining | hight to his Jellows lor 80 many years should at this. | late day bave been piaced beiore the tribunal of | censure and criticism irom any real or imaginary | W | gets of Mis own. ood of humanity and all future religious pray that he may come out unscatwed trom the present fiery ordeal, to lorgive divine,’ erty toreveal the proofs which he has hitherto, ¥’ committee in the letter dated on the 13th of July, Ip which be deciared bis intention to prepare the “full and detailed statemenw” which 13 DOW so enxiousiy looked for, Mrs, Tilton leit her home on Saturday, July 11. On the following Monday Mr, Tilton’s preliminary letter to the Plymouth church committee was given to the press, On Monday next Mr. Tilton's statement will be laid before the committee. Of | its contents nothing can now be said. 1t will teil its own story. Butit should be generally under- atood that uf Mrs. Tilton had remained un- ger the protection of her husband neither | the promised statement mor any writing | 9! similar character would have been placed be- fore the committee or the public. In the cnanged condition ©: affairs Mr. Tilton teels himself at ii concealed. His home is broken up; in a very lew Gays he will be a wanderer upon the face of tue earth; nis wife will regain possession of ner old home and all that it contains, by his own gener- 00s gift, and the world will judge between man abd wie. Mr. Tilton’s friends desire that thts plain state- | ba Ment may be made public, in order that the rea- Bons for breaking @ ong silence may be properly waderstoud. The Statements. [From the Brooklyn Mr. Beecher’s statement, althougn not yet onl- eially belore the committee, 1s in the hands of nis Mr. Beecher addresses himself in detail to the Tilton case, explains the nature of nis troubie | with Mr. Tilton, denies that he ever made ab impure intimation to Mrs. Tilton, and con- cindes with an absolnte and unequivocal dental of | Views as iollows all the other slanders which have been set in | Motion against him. He acknowledges that Mrs. Tilton complained to him of ber busband, that she | spoke of his infidelity and cited mstances, spoke | of his going with strange women and proved that her statement was true. ‘Mr. Beecher, to advise her as» man an webip in the future, and to bury t! ‘This we are injormed is the scope of MF.
