“THE COURTS. A case of alleged perjury, in which a man named ‘Arthur Smith is the defendant, came up yesterday before United States Commissioner Osborn, It is charged that Smith became surety on @ bona, and swore that he resided at No. 84 Broadway, had several thousand dollars on deposit in the Second National Bank of Jersey City, and was worth, above his ltabilities, over $60,000, The prosecution claim that this statement was false, but Smith as- serts that he will be able to prove his responsi- bility. The examination will be proceeded with next week, MARINE COURT—PART 1, Important to Boarding House Keepers. Before Judge McAdam. Von Eltz vs. Classen.—Defendant keeps a boara- ing house in Waverley piace; plaintut is a German music teacher, and formerly boarded with the de- fendant, and alleges that wien he engaged board ‘he told the laudiaagy that he had no regular in- come, but would pay her as he recetved money from his pupils, and she agreed to receive him on vhose terms. In May last, however, she entered | his room during bis absence and seized all his per- sonal effects, including wearing apparel, books, music, private correspondence and two gold med- als, which he had received tor services in the Aus- | trian army; and he brought this action to recover $500 damages. He admitted, however, that at the tume his things were taken he was owing the land- tay $105 tor board, and that she tad pangatedly. demanded payment. The Court stated that board- ing house Keepers have the same lien upon.the baggage and personal effects of their guests that innkeepers have, and that the landiady in this case Was justified in seizing and retaining possession of the plainuil’s eects until the board bill was paid. The Court, thereiore, directed a verdict for the de- dendant, SUPREME COURT—CHAMBERS, Decisions By Judge Lawrence, Hill vs. Shelbury.—Relerevce ordered. For several weeks a gang of thieves has been operating in the Second ward, About a month ago they stole four cases of Chinese vermilion from the store of Marcus Witty, No, 94 John street, Mr. Witty notified all the gentlemen in the paint business of the larceny and requested them to keep a sharp lookout for the thieves, Abraham Brothers ‘was one of those who received the woresaid notification, and when, on Friday last some — yermufon was offered them for sale, they used a little stratagem which resulted in the arrest of James Farrell, John Jennings and John Jones, alias Kilsey, an ex-convict, The last named prisoner said’ that some of the stolen property had been sold to S. Schoonmaker, o1 the firm of Close & Schoonmaker, ot No. 5 Chatham street, and upon Detective Devins making inquiry at their premises three boxes of vermilion were found. On their part, however, there was no concealment whatever. Mr. Schoonmaker, with the others, was arraigned before Justice Fiammer yesterday at the Tombs Police Court. The former was discharged on his parole and the other prisoners were held to auswer. FIFTY-SEVENTH STREZT POLICE COURT. Felonious Assaults. Charles Wagner preferred a charge of felonious Assault against Christopher Norman, of No. 447 West Fiftieth street, who beat himin a dangerous manner on the head with a billet of wood. Held tor trial in $1,000 bail, Michael Nolan, a night watchman, was held for trial for beating with a club Peter Geiser, of No. 423 West Forty-seventh street, and injuring bim 30 Severely that he Was not abie to appear in Court to prosecute, Bail was given in $1,000 to answer, John Coyle, of No, 211 East Twenty-ninth street, and John Smith, two rivai cartmen, were brought to Court by Officer Murphy, of the Twenty-first pre- cinet, They were both covered with biood from terrible gashes on their heads, inflicted by one upon the other with cart rungs. The Court failed to discover Who the aggressor was from the festi- mony produced, and, to compromise the matter, fined each $10 and held them in $500 to Keep the peace for six mouths, LOVE AND JEALOUSY, Sarah Getchell, of No, highth avenue, a very fine looking woman, dresseq 1n the latest fashion, was arrairned on a charge of disorderiy conduct. Mrs. Joanna Johnston, who, until recently, re- sided im the same house with Miss Getchell, charged her with spitting in her face. “And did you doit ?? asked His Honor, of the accused. “Yes, sir, I did, and three times, because she said, in presence of the other people in the house, that I was her husband’s mistress, The next time she says so | will punmh her more severely.” Mrs. Johnston admitted having used the words attitbuted to her, and she would now go further and gay, in presence of the Court, that she caught | —~-~~-~ Miss ‘Getchell in very, very suspicious relations with her husband, who had abandoned herself ‘and was now payiug*her $9 a week by order of the Court, while he spent the remainder of his money and the whole of his time in Miss Getckeli’s coin- pany. Her husband 1s a printer, but is also con- neoted with an uptown church choir, of which Miss Getchell 18 likewise a member. The Court said he did not want to hear further of her cese and disposed of it by holding both women in bonus to keep the peace for six months. Probably the most judicious way of getiing rid of them. The difculty in raw- ing such a large amount of bait was that the charges against the adairs of the Tax Office had been so universal that persies were afraid the newspapers might say they had been shown favors in the tax bills if y came forward at this janc- ture, as sureties for Captain Gill, It was the news- pers that had Kept him tn jail so long, ‘the friends of the prisoner came forward later in the day and rescued Gill from the painful necessity of remaining in jail through the summer py going security for him. The bundsmen are A, 8. Wheeler and Samuel M. Meeker, They justified each, be- fore the District Attorney, in the sum of $24,000, The prisoner was then released oa bail before Judge Newson. Mr. Wheeler is one of the bonds- mien for ex-Tax Collector Isaac Badeau; Mr. Meeker is a well known member of the Bar, Gill will not be tried again until the September term of the Court of Sessions. HAPPY POLICEMEN. Items from Headquarters. ‘The necessary bonds were filea yesterday by the Treasurer of the Board of Police and the men were paid during the day. All the Commissioners were present at the Ventral Ofice throughout the after- noon and the canvassiog for Superintendent went on. The leaders of both political parties expressed themseives to the Board in favor of Inspector Wall- ing, and a petition, signed bya large number of leading bankers, brokers and merchants, was sent in requesting his election to the office. Presideut Matsell has signified is intention of putting a stop to the practice so long indulged in atthe Headquarters of captains ruuning to the Commissioners with compiaints and pretended in- formation, Ail communication from the force to the Com- mission must tn future be done in writing and sent through the Superinteudent, Requests for promo- tion, transfer and leave of absence must be tor- warded in this way, None others will be received by the Board. Captains will be held responsible for the preran don: of crime in their precincts, and will not be allowed to escape by throwing the blame on tne men.
