The Alleged Election Frauds Sixth Ward, Before Judge Reynolds, ‘The case of Alderman James Dunne and John J. Campbell, who were indicted on the charge of election frauds in 1871, was called for trial yeater- day morning. The defendants were poll clerks, and the allegation is that they stuffed tne ballot boxes and placed names of mythical voters on the poll lists. Mr. Tracy, for the defence, moved to quash the indictment on technical grounds, and argued his Points at great length, Mr. S, D. Morris, who had been retained by the District Attorney to prose- cute, opposed the motion. Mr. Pinkerton’s Account of Roberts’ Arrest—How Much Monty the Detect- ives Received and What the Defence Propose te Show. The trial of Andrew L. Roberts, aecused of forg- ing Central Railway bonds, was resumed yester- day, District Attorfiey Phelps appearing for the The Court of Apy as follows :—Nos. prosecution, ex-Mayor Halj, Mr. Purdy and ex- | Recorder Smith for the prisoner. Mr. Robert A. Pinkerton swore that, he was present when Detective Fields arrested Roberts; he found in Roberts’ private drawer a United States revenue stamp, identified by Olmstead as bearing the cancellation mark of the Western Union stamp which was furnished to Roberts by a Mr. Brown; he also found a number of old revenue stamps. Ex-Mayor Hall objected to the reception of this testimony. District Attorney Phelps said he proposed to show that Mr. Pinkerton also found oid revenue stamps which were uncancelied. Judge Brady excluded the evidence. w£X-Recorder Smita cross-examined the witness. He satd he had always followed the business of a detective; he did not remember having been told at the search of Roberts house that 31 WAS HIRED BY MRS, ROBERTS and not by Roberts; he took the papers to the office of the District Attorney, and gave them to | Mr, Allen, assistant District Attorney; he could | not tell exactly the amount of the receipts for bonds which he took from the houge.
