The correspondent of the New York Tribune sent the following dispatch to that paper last night concerning the recent safe burglary in this city: On the night of the 234 of April last, in. the midst of the investigation into District ‘affairs, A MOST MYSTERIOUS BUa@LARY occurred in the office of the Uuited States At- torney for this District. The safe which was robbed belonged to the United States, and was in the eftice of the Ag-istant District Attorney, Rickard Harrington, Jr., who is also Secretary O° the District and wus Oaeof the counsel for Gov. Shepherd in the investigation. From what at once became public it was once a rent that the burglary was connected with the investigation; that is. It was not committed for purposes of plander, bul tiat th eves were em ployed by other persons toterested in the in- quiry. The Joint Committee was therefore in- structed to inquire into the matter, and they tuok the testimony in private HARBINGTON’S TRSTIMONY. The firet witness examined was Harrington himself, whose verston of the effsit was stantially as follows: Oa the morning of the Gay of the burglary Harrington says that he received an anonymous letter bearing the stamp of the St. Nichoias Hotel, New York, novncing that bis safe was to be robbed on that night of the next; this letter he showed t» a rumber of persons, and in the evening to Cuiet of Police Kichards and Detective Clarvoe, with whom be made an arrangement to wate for the burglars. Harrington and Richards tirst took their station in an adjoining room, but, as several persons came there and found that tome one was there they finally went oat, crossed the street, and took their stations where they could see what transpired. Other detec. tives were stationed about the building. ‘wo men were plaiuly geen to enter the building close the door, open the windows and close the shotters, ard were heard at work on the safe. After several hours an explosion occurred, and subsequently the two men came out of the building, one of them carrying a bundle. All of those who were watching fullowed the man, who seemed not the least alarmed at see- ing them, and allowed the other man to eac ape. The burglar went in the direction of the bonve of Columbos Alexander; was directed to the street by some of the party who were feflowing bim. After ringing both the main and base ment door bells in vain, he was arrested by rhe police. He bad in the bag papers and books that had been taken from the sate. In one case two women bave been bitten and in angjher a woman and three children before the offending animal could be secured. These facts ought to be sufficient to decide even so ery friend of the canine tribe as Mr. Bergh to demand the general muzzling of dogs allowed to roam about the city. Before the heated term had come the Herald bad insisted on the adoption of precan- tionary measures, but owing to the waut of energy slown by the city authorities the order tur the muzzling of all dogs bas not yet b=en tesued.
