The smoke awakened Mr. Mcintyre, who aroused his children and wife and hurried them out at the second story window, with the exception of Patrick, the eldest boy, who in the excitement was forgotten. As soon as the flames were got under control by the firemen search was made for the missing boy, who was found dead in his bed in the attic. He had evi- dently been euffocated. Deceased was ten years of age. The other members o! the iamily were more or less injured by jumping from the ‘second story. The building, which was owned by ex- Judge Miller, of Queens county, was damage’ to the extent of $1,000, Mr. Mcintyre lost, in furni- ture and effects, about $1,500. The Fire Marshal is investigating the origin of the fire. THE MEN WHO BULE SOUTH CAROLINA, Colonel McArthur, editor of the Troy Northern Budget, in a letter from South Carolina, gives the fol lowing personnel of the officials who govern South Carolina :— We called on the most of the State officers at the Capitol. They are as follows :—Governor Moses, a “scalawag,”’ a rebel during the war, of Hebrew descent, white, formerly Democrat, worst toad in the puddle; Lieutenant Governor Gleaves, biack, free born, carpet-bagger trom Louisiana; Secre- | tary or State, free colored, formerly a Union sold- fer; State Treasurer Cardozo, mulatto Jew, car- pet-bagger irom Massachusetts, think he was torm- erly a preacher at New Haven, Coun. Cardozo is @ Character—a large, portly, dignified, cunning, sly, self-poised, secretive, selilsh, cold, mercenary man, eat up with ambition—wants to be Governor, | is “on the make,” “takes things” when offered, but ; has a cautious faculty for covering up and nid- fog; has the love of ‘nity an lace of the black, the craft and acquisitiveness of the Jew and the push of the Massachusetts Yank. Attor- ney General, “‘scalawag,” native. white. Comp- troller General, White carpet-bagger irom Ohio, Hoge by name, think he was in the army and in Congress, and has been one of the judges in the State. The Supreme Court, Moses, father o! the Gevernor, Hebrew extraction, white, “scalawag.” Chief Justice, formerly a democrat, and a judge in the State before the war, Two other Supreme Court Judges, both carpet-baggers, one white and one black. There are eight circuit judges, all white, of whom seven are “scalawags” (natives, repub- licans) and one carpet-bagger. From all the fore- going it will be observed that the “carpet-bag- gers” don’t begtn to compare in numbers with the | white “scalawags”’ in any department of the gov- ernment of South Carolina, whether Executive, Leyisiative or Judicial. The few ‘‘carpet-baggers”’ who do bold office in South Carolina are not at all ashamed of being thus designated, THE OHILD STARVING CASE.
