Coroner Croker yesterday held an inquest in the case of Robert Pratt, five and a half years of age, late of No. 300 East Ninth street, who, it is alleged, died from the effects of injuries received on Tues- | day last, at the corner of Ninth street and First avenue, by being struck and knocked down by Tomaso Tassno, an Italian ice cream vender, who | travelled througn the street with a three-wheeled cart. Some boys had collected around the Italian, to whom they used insulting and abusive language, whereupon, as 1s charged, Tassno made the assault on deceased, The only evidence against the ac- cused touching the assault was that of two small boys, and full credence was not attached to it, owing to their tender years, William F. Pratt, the littie brother of deceased, testified that he saw the Italian strike the de- ceased, who fell on the pavement, after which the | Italian kicked him; deceased got up and staggered away toward home. John J. Hanbury, also @ lad, who stood on the Opposite siae of the street, deposed that he saw the italian strike the deceased and atter he was down on the sidewalk the [talian kicked him, Deceased was a delicate child, and veputy Cor- oner MacWhinole, who made an autopsy, found that death resulted from menin; single scratch or bruise was to be found on the head or body of deceased. The jury found that death resulted from menin- gitis, hastened by a blow supposed to have been given by the prisoner on the 26th day of May, 1874. Tassno was sent to the Tombs, but will be re- | leased on @ reasonable amount of bail. THE THIRD TERM. [From the St. Paul Pioneer.) Perhaps the gravest of the dangers to which the country is subjected is the hunger and thirst of Presidents to secure a second term, It was this ambition which led Abraham Lincoln to consent to the inauguration of the most stupendous political machine ever invented—the memorable provost marshal system; it was this which pursued Andrew which possessed the thoughts of General Grant from the first moment of his accession to his first term. ‘There is no man possessed of weak human na- ture who can resist the temptation to employ every means within the grasp of his poweriul piace to protract bis Presidential occupancy.
