10 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market—Its Present and Future. THE BANK STATEMENT. Government and Railroad Bonds Steady GOLD SHIPMENTS. Reports from the Treasury Department. Wal. STREET, Satumpay, May 23—0 P «.} No better Mtustration of the true condition of ‘the stook market can be given than is embraced in its bistory for the past two days. The market opened on Friday morning with some spirit ata slight advance on the closing prices of Thursday, but was met with an order for the sale of afew thousand shares of Toledo, Wabash and Western, ‘when this stock exhibited such weakness that on transactions of only about 5,00u shares it recorded a@ decline of 1% percent. The order was then judi- ciously withdrawn, and the point was put in cir- ulation that Wabash was raided. This enabled a @ertain party to buy freely of other stocks, It was ® point worth considering, and was responded to Dy avery general desire on the part of the “bears’” ‘to close up their short contracts and get “right” on the market, which resulted in a very “strong” market for the balance of the day, with an average advance at the close over the opening prices of Jess than &% per cent on the active stocks, This morning THE SAME MANIPULATION ‘was continued, supplemented with the very posi- tive information that a certain party had for sev- eral days been quietly buying all the stocks he could without advancing the market. This state- ment was successful in bringing into line the re- ‘maining shorts, so that betore midday the almost universal expression of opinion was to the effect that the market had seen its lowest prices and ‘Was now ready to advance, which feeling was en- couraged for the balance of the day by a steady upward movement. To-night probably discovers | a market more bare of the sustaining power of short contracts than at any period for the past @ixty days, The next few days will demonstrate how much of this change of feeling has been caused py adroit manipulation and how much is due to any real change tn the con- dition of the general business of the country. The transactions to-day amounted to 119, 889 shares, which were distributed as fol- Jows:—Chicago and Rock Island, 4,260; North- ‘West common, 7,650; C. C. and J.
