FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Dull and Declining. MONEY EASY AND ABUNDANT. Government and the Older Rail- road Bonds Stsady. GOLD 12 1-4 A 112 18. WALL STREET, } Monpay, May 18—6 P. M. The course of stocks to-day demonstrate the truth of the suggestions that have been made in ‘these columns during the last two months, We have declared that there was no positive strength am the market, no real resiliency, no objective point around which operators could rally for a rise, no basis for the sporadic “bull” movements which Rave caused more or less of loss, and no immedi- ate fature on which dependenc? could be placed by those who seek; to avall themselves of profit on what ts called the ‘ong’ side of the market, The reasons assigned were brief. There isa gen- era) want of confidence tn the inside condition of railways, and these constitute the capital of the Street. ‘Iney show a decline of earnings corre- sponding with the decrease in the general business ofthe country. Trade is everywhere diminished. The sequel of the panics of 1837 and 1857 is again upon us. We cannot escape these financial oycies. They come and go, and the speculator enjoys his profit, according to the judgment he exhibits tn adapting himself to the prevailing condition THE NEWS FROM WISCONSIN, fs published in the HERALD yesterday, is not en- couraging to Eastern capitalists who have ad- vanced money for the purpose of developing West- | 10 ern railways.
