After the reception of the bt a warm discussion ensued, in which the Commissioners were severely denounced, and re- solutions were adopted that no member of the | union should pay license until the Excise Commis- sioners were willing to grant more equitable | terms. THE SKATING MATCH, Great Crowds Around the Windsor Ho- tel—A Fair Start, but No Race—The Crowds Too Great and the Affair Aban- doned. ‘The anticipated race on parlor skates between Gilmure and Smith, which was announced to take place from the Windsor Hotel, in Fifth avenue, | last eveming, drew out a crowd of people com- | posed of gentiemen, iadies, loafers and boys, which from eight o'clock steadily accumulated until there could not nave deen ess than 3,000 persons on Fifth avenue. Indeed, it became a nuisance to the hotel and to passers-by. The fact that the race was announced for eight and that no signs of the skaters were to be seen gave the very general impression that the whole thing was @ hoax. Sundry references were made to “Sothern” and Mr. “Tom Collins,” and stories were told of the Trinity steeple fying feat, the philip Lee hoax and other celebrated “sells.” In the meantime the crowd of small boys exhausted some ol their exuberant spirits by laughing at their seniors, and using such famiilar phrases as “What a sell??? and “ain't you green?’ &c. The risibles of the disappointed crowd were excited for @ time in this manner.
