Wau STREET, } Sarurpay, Jan, 31—6 P, M. ‘The bank statement for the presen’ t week is not ‘what was expected, and shows a decline in its ex- cess of lawful money, as compared with the last Week, Of $478,125, The increase in loans amounts ‘to $2,334,700; in deposits, to $428,000, There was also an increase of legal tenders to the amount of $994,000, but a decrease in specie of $1,397,000. The total liabilities this week are $260,018,000, as compared with $259,716,000 last week, and the ex- + Cess over legal reserve 18 $27,215,000. The open- ing was made with @ confident undertone ap- parent, and until one ovclock there was a moderate advance; but after that hour the pubii- cation of the bank statement and its record of a decline in the excess over the legal reserve oper- ated aga sort of wet blanket, and there was a de- cline. The largest advance was made in Michigan Central, which rose trom 9234 to 9544, Union ranged between 764 and 75%, closing at 76, Northwest common opened at 694%, rose to 59%, sold down and closed at 68%. Pacific Mail sold at 414; @ 41 @ 41% @ 41, vu. C. and I, C. advanced from 31 to 31%, holding the advance tothe end. Union Pacific closed at 36, alter an opening at 345; and an advance to 3534. Pacific Railroad of Missouri went to 40, At- lantic and Pacific preferred soid at 1934 a 19 a 18% a18a19 418%. Lake Spore moved from 81% to 82, and closed at 815%.
